Have been reading the mag many years....saw the chrome show rigs, monster trucks, and desert racers. I am pleased to see the "daily use" articles as well as the competition ones. Also am glad to see the trail runs around the country. I have a 78 Bronco with many mods, that has served as my "do everything / go anywhere" driver.


It is now going to be off-road only. I will be driving a newer Dodge on the roads and light trails.


So stay the course....there are many of us who do many things, with all kinds of rigs. What works for me, may not work for someone else, and what someone else likes, I may not. Cover as much as you can and take the negative feedback with a grain of salt.


Love the mag now as I have for years.

I also own a 78 Bronco and have had it for about 5 years. Before that I had a 79 Bronco for 7 years. I am just wondering if I can pick your brain with a problem I have had with both.


Whenever I do slow trails with alot of climbing or do alot of towing in the summer I find the engine gets quite hot. It has never overheated but gets pretty warm sometimes. I notice you said you did alot of mods to yours and I'm wondering if you ever had this problem and what you may have done to fix it.


I put in a higher flow water pump but this hasn't seemed to help and the only other solution I can think of is to get an aluminum rad.However they are pretty expensive and I'm not sure it will solve the problem.


My truck has the 400m,C6,np205, and 4.10 gearing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about putting in a low temp. thermostat.


If your radiator is the original one, maybe it is somewhat clogged. Try back flushing the cooling system. Maybe try a flex fan if your original one has the clutch fan.


Just some suggestions:

I tried the backflushing and the low temp thermostat and it didn't help. I'll give the flex fan a try though. Thanks for the help!

you could also switch to single or dual eletric fans?

My understanding of electric fans is that they don't run all the time but turn off and on at certain temperature settings. Will they cool as well as a manual fan that runs all the time? I don't know much about these.

With electric fans they won't shut off until the vehicle reaches its desired temp.  So as long as your vehilce is still hot the fans will still run.

Thanks for the help guys.


I bought a new 4 row rad and flex fan, which i'm istalling tomorrow. We'll see if that solves my heating issues.

I see you've thrown money at the cooling system....I have to ask....have you checked the timing? If the timing is advanced too far, the engine will run hot!

yeah i checked and double checked the timing. I put in the four row rad and flex fan and it seems to have solved my problem. Thanks for the help.
