There's always someone out there tryin to change a good thing!! You said it ! - It's called "4-wheel" - in big-ass letters, and "off-road" in teeny tiny letters!  4X4 rules!! - all others come in 8th place or worse. Why they even mention anyone after 3rd place is a mystery to me! - just my poinion.

Top Truck Challenge is a Four Wheeler event guys, different website. I think it would be hilarious to see a 2wd try to do the ULTIMATE ADVENTURE. However all the delays and breakage would not make for a good story and would probably cost them a lot of time. A truck with 2wd and tons of ground clearence will never go as fare as an equally equipped truck with 4wd, its just basic sense. As for not needing low range, you should seriously consider redefineing what you call wheelin.

At one time I too thaught that only 4wd trucks were good for muddin untill the day that I went to buy a 1997 Z71 when I was 19 and couldn't get insurance for less than $250 a month.  Then I asked them how much it would cost to insure a 2000 1ton chevy and they told me $70!  The next day I baught a new 2wd C3500.  I put a 3" body lift on it and 35" BFGs and it actually worked in the mud.  5 years later it has an 11" suspension lift, 3000rpm stall converter, crane cam, Detroit locker, and 42" swampers.  I go everywhere with that truck.  It doesn't matter how steep the hills are or how deep the mud is.  I go evrywhere that a 4wd truck can go.  For only having 2wd my truck does pretty good.  It is just my little way of sticking it to the insurance companies. when I put my truck up against 4wd trucks with the same tires it holds it's own.  I just wish that there was an off road club in Arkansas that would allow a 2wd truck.  I am not one of those posers that lift a truck for looks.  There isn't a body panel on my truck that isn't mangled.  Sometimes I just think that people are afraid to have a 2wd truck whoop theirs.  Maybe it is just because I don't care about what breaks on my truck maybe thats what makes it go everywhere.  But I can always get replacement parts so why not break something trying.

$70/ month insurance? WOW! THAT'S CHEAP! In the city I live in,  any guy under 25 and a clean driving record can't get insurance on even the dullest, boring vehicle for under $400/month Cdn (or $350 U.S.) and that was even the same way back in 1997 when I was learning to drive.

Also, no one can get car insurance cheaper than $1500/ yr Cdn. or about $1200 U.S. So your basic 4x4 truck on a person old enough to get the lowest insurance would still likely have to pay equivalent to $2000-2500/yr U.S. to insure a 4x4.

BTW, this guy says he goes mudbogging and mentioned his options at the time were the 97 z71 and a C3500...

Redbeast, didn't you mention that IFS 4x4's break parts all the time in deep mud and suck for mudbogging? It's not cheap to upgrade a newer truck to a solid  front axle and at least he's not breaking newer IFS 4x4 parts with those 42's he's running on his 2wd.

I have beaten the crap out of my truck for 6 years and so far I have only broke 2 tierod ends and one steering box.  I have never broke any other parts on the IFS.  Maybe 2wds are just built that much better.

I know 2wd's also have IFS, but that's not what I meant. 4x4 IFS have parts that incorporate front half axles, t-case, a differential etc. You don't have any driving parts to break on the front end. I was comparing solid axles for 4wd and IFS 4wd and how it seems to be too easy to break 4wd IFS parts. There are probably 2-3 times as many parts that make up the suspension of a modern 4x4 vs. a 2wd. I'm also not surprised if it's stronger than a modern (IFS) 4x4 front end.
