your most likely using more fuel than necissary, i would go with 600 and leave it at that

either go with a holly avenger or  a quadrajet if you are going to be 4wheeling much, personelly i like a quad because once you get them set you dont have to mess with them anymore, but to find a good one any more you have to buy a new one, a good place to check is in a summit catalog

HEY whats up.  can you be a little more specific about the small block?has it been bored or stroked.. is it got stock heads or after market and if so what are the valve sizes or  if its a vortec motor? whats the cam size ,what elderbrock intake does it got? big tube headers or small tubes ,short or full length,  flat top pistons or dished or other?whats the gear ratio and whats your base timeing and over all timeing..if its stock ignition or aftermarket and what climate you live in... ( if it an't boging or stumbling chances is your fine)if it is try this.. alot goes into what carb size you need their is not a one size fits all..chevy small blocks can be tempermental most of what i  asked has to do with what size carb you need .  here is just a few tuning tips theirs alot more that can get power from the holley this is just basic.. run the truck up to 45-55 on a desserted road then switch it off at speed don't turn the key to lock you probably knew that coast off the side of road  and pull a few plugs out if their wet and black to rich..if their dry and whitesh you are to lean if they look grayish brown you are in the ball park if not its just as simple as changing the jets if rich go down 2 jet sizes and do the run again. same thing go 2 more..if need be? same goes if lean but go up 2 jet sizes at a time this is just on the primaries you'll have to do this on the secondaries. But its ckeck and ajust the jets and when useing a holley double pumper off road its a good idea to put jet extension in the secondaries to keep gas flowing to the jets when on step grades if it seems alot or complicated look at it as very simple . i ask all of this couse was not shure if you kwew or not hope i did not make it worse.. after you ajust it out the cheapest way is a vaccum gauge. hook it to a good vacum souce on intake ajust carb to highest vac reading if it bogs real bad or stumbles alot its to big for motor or the timeing off  but this is alot cheaper than buying another carb maybe $25$ or less good luck hope i was some help i run a 750 4150 holley on one of mine and a demon 650 on the other. no troubles
