Hey, I'm lookin for more horse and better gas mileage. One of my buddies told me to look into getting a supercharger or a blower for my '99 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L, 4 wd automatic. What would you guys recommend? Also I saw this add for the "Turbonator" has anyone here used it, recommend it? Thanks

boost won't improve fuel economy. A chip on a newer engine might. Bump up the compression ratio? If you have big tires and stock gears, swap the gears.

You'll definetly want to swap in deeper gears if you want bigger tires and good fuel economy,  especially if you do a lot of city driving.

Wow, I come bact to this site after a month and evrybody wants to improve mpg. What a change.

I am sorry but there is no magic device that can improve mileage. If there was one we all would have it.

The sad fact is if you want to turn large tires with a big displacement engine on a vehicle that is 4000lb to 10000lb(or more) with 4 wheel drive... You are going to pay at the pump.

If you really can't afford to drive a 4x4. You may need to buy a sissy car.

I agree!! Is this the Sport Compact 4WOR site now ?

'High horsepower' and 'good fuel economy' are inversely proportional !!!

You can't have your cake and eat it too !!  It just goes against the laws of nature. I didn't invent the rules, I'm just the bearer of bad news!

This is true if you have a truck with big tires, but you want to get as much gas as possible. one easy way is just bolt ons. The Tornado can gain up to 13hp and 4 more mpg, a throttle body spacer can do the same, its just some little things you have to look for. Your not going to get the best mpg, but it will be better than what you had.

Have you tried one of those Tornado devices yourself ?  I thought they were one of those "as seen on tv" gimmicks that give you "5 extra hp" - like waxing your truck so the air flows better over it, or folding your side mirrors. - I'm not bustin on ya here, I just had not heard anyone say anything about them, except for the guy who invented & markets them.

I installed a K&N cold air intake kit on my '02 S-10  DD. It was supposed to improve fuel economy but didn't live up to the hype. Part of the reason may be due to my driving habits, but then I didn't change them from before I installed the kit. It did give me a few more horses and a better sound out of my anemic 2.2 engine. I bought this truck for the "fuel economy" since I drive 40 miles to work, each way, every day. I found out I could have gone with a 4.3 6-Cyl and got the same "economy". ( it's not an over-head 4-cyl cam engine - translation: It's crap ).

I heard the new Colorados ( S-10's replacements ) have a 5-cyl engine - Anyone have any info on these ? Are they better / worse than just opting for the 4.3  6-Cyl ?

Some of my friends have put the tornado on there cars and said it did make a difference. And one problem with the cold air intake is that it doesnt get enough air unless you have a hood made for cold air intake, because the air cleaner is in that box it just starves itself of air. So you actually end up loseing what you could have.

I've heard and read that the GM 5-cyl. likes to overheat. Definately not a engine that I would want to own. I'd rather have my mickey mouse 3.0 V-6 Ferd engine.

The Chevy 4.3 engine is a nice motor with plenty of get up and go with pretty good fuel economy.

As for the Tornado device, it doesn't look like it would do too much. I myself have never used one and I can't justify paying I think $70.00 for one.

I think it is probalbly one of those "TV scams".

Best you could do. Buy a diesel motor. Build it up to pump out some real horse power, and tourque. Make a biodiesel distilery. They are not that hard to make. Get hooked up w/ veg oil from some fast food restraunts. Run biodiesel. It costs some where between .53-1.00 a gal. to make. Depends on how much you'r processor costs to make. Won't get better milage, but the fuel will be cheaper.

I tryed one on my 99 Tahoe and lost 2 mpg and could not tell any differance on power so if you got a late model 5.7 I got a tornado in my toolbox

Consumer reports tested the Tornado and several other products that worked the same and were supposed to produce better gas mileage and horsepower. NONE of the products lived up to the claims. They are a waste of money.

If you are running larger tires and a lift you will never get good gas mileage. However you can optimize what you should get by letting your engine breath better. Try a highflow intake and air filter and free flowing exhaust. Make sure the fuel system is clean, air up your tires on the highway on the way to the trail, and change driving habits. Slow starts and stops, keep off the go pedal as much as possible. Also make sure you are using the right gearing for your engine's horsepower and torque ratings.

Will the cost of the add ons be worth the mileage you will gain? Who knows!

If it makes you feel any better my Bronco only gets 9 mpg in the city and 13 on the hwy!
