MY SON BOUGHT A 1986 CHEVY S-10 4X4 AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER CHANGED THE AXLES TO OLDER STYLE AXLES BUT WE DONT KNOW WHAT YEAR AND WHAT GEAR THEY ARE. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS: WHERE DO I LOOK TO FIND A CASTING NUMBER AND WHERE AT ON THE INTERNET I CAN RESEARCH THOSE NUMBERS?

Take the truck to any shop that knows anything about off road vehicles. Just by looking at the axle's diff cover they should be able to tell you what kind of axle it is. If they cant they are a useless shop and the mechanic is an idiot. Pull the diff cover off and count the ring and pinion gears. dived the pinion gears teeth into the ring gear's teeth, and that will tell you your gear ratio. Ex: 41 teeth on the ring gear, 11 teeth on the pinion gear. 41/11= 3.7272 (3.73 gear ratio).
