I heard this weird sound when I accelerate, it kinda sounds like metal on metal like I have no oil (atleast what I would assume that sounds like). I checked my dipstick I definately have oil in there but the weird thing is that is has a gas smell to it. I don't think thats right but I thought I would ask your guys opinion, thanks. '99 cherokee, 4x4, automatic, last changed the oil about 3,000 to 3,500 miles ago.

sounds like bad news to me. i'm no expert but I would guess bad rings? or maybe bad head gasket with cracked head. I don't know but I definatly wouldn't drive it unless you have to

I don’t know if it has a mechanical fuel pump or not? If it does it can leak gas into the oil. You need to change oil ASAP.

i would guess your piston rings are really bad. you need a rebuild and dont drive it any more because if the rings are broken since u hear metal to metal it may damage the cylinder walls if it hasnt yet

I changed the oil, it seems to run a little better. I took some of the old oil and put it in a clear jar so I can hopefully see if the gas and oil separate (if there is any). As far as which kind of fuel pump it is I'm not sure but its a '99 so I would guess its electrical. Why would it matter.

The electric fuel pumps are mounted in or near the fuel tank. The mechanical fuel pump is bolted to the engin block and has a rod running to the cam, if the mechanical fuel pump is bad it can leek gas int the engin block. Do a compression test of all of the cylinders and see if one or two have lower pressure. If so you need to figure out weather you have bad valve guides or the rings are bad. With the plugs out squirt a few drops in the cylinder with low pressure, if the pressure comes up a little the rings are bad. If the pressure does not come up you have bad valve guides. Gas can leek past bad valve guides as well as oil can. The scrapeing noise is the scarry part.

I've been there and done that with factory mechanical fuel pumps on a chevy 350ci engine. Fuel pump diaphram goes bad and leaks fuel into your engine oil. The oil pressure gauge shows very little oil pressure and the engine starts to overheat if you don't back off it. The engine oil feels like a very light machine oil in your hands. - Don't get a cigarette near that oil either.
It can screw up all your engine gaskets if you don't get away with just tightening up all the gaskets. You will need to change the oil a few times before you clear all the gasoline out. Replace the oil pan gasket, and oil filter gasket if you have a seperate one than the one with the oil filter.
I went to a HD Holley mechanical fuel pump and never had the problem again. Carter, and Edelbrock carry these pump types as well.

kind of an old post, but here goes. you might have a bad fuel pressure regulator, or 1 or more bad fuel injectors, take it to a good shop and pay the 1/2 hr diagnostic time dude, to find a "good" shop look for a private indiv. w/ lots of vehicles around, being cycled through, ask friends, neighbors,etc..if taken to a dealer, beware, they love to sell parts, whereas a good private shop will most likely fix only what you need
