I was considering a possible build up. In Iraq right now and just trying to figure out a good route to go. I have been thinking about building a scout2 or jeepster commando w/ a chevy 6.5 TD and NV4500 or 700r4 w/ dana 300 and wagoneer dana 44's. any body ever hear of or done this engine/tranny swap? Info would be appreciated.

in ttc 2004 a guy had a old land cruser with a 6.5 td and a 700r4 on unimog axles and 44 in boggers he did pretty good

I am doing a swap on a commando now (hence the moniker),and using an older Chevy 350 and parts (which kills me because I am a Ford man, but the engine and chassis were free!). You should know that not many aftermarket parts are available for Commandos so your fab skills will be tested, but on the other hand, it will really stand out in a crowd of other jeeps! Good luck over there and stay safe. I am a 10 year Marine vet who fully supports all of our troops, and would like to meet anyone who doesn't in any dark alley of their choice! OOH RAH! Watch your six.

I know the 6.5 you see over there is a mechanical setup for the injection pump , however the civilian model is electronically controlled . plus the 6.5 engine is notorious fro blowing heads and cracking blocks . but the are fairly cheap and easy to come by .. if it were me i would have to seriuosly think about using a 5.9 cuminns instead as it is a mechanical setup and by far easier to get more power out of and they are far more reliable than a civilian 6.5 .
