OK, so I was having problems with my computer,sensors,pretty much the whole TBI unit. so when I blew my head gasket in my '90 Chevy Silverado I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to rebuild the motor and go old school,with a carburator. I'm halfway through the rebuild and I've been thinking of how to wire a new ignition along with the existing harness that powers the essentials,i.e.:headlights,tail lights,blinkers,windows,stuff like that. This is where all the questions come in. Does the old computer have anything to do with those types of components, or do they simply run to the fuse box and then to the existing ignition? Does any one know the easiest route to go with this? I go totally blank when it comes to wiring,some type of dyslexia or something. So if any one has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

TBI to carburation? You're proabably the first 4 wheeler I've heard wanting to do that conversion.
Is your 90 silverado going to be strictly an off road vehicle or is it going to be street legal? I ask this because your emissions requirements are going to be very tough, and having a carb will make it very hard to pass. Not to mention your MPG will probably suffer as well.
The ECM is going to control lots of other emissions stuff other than just the sending fuel to the throttle body. It takes info from the various sensors and adjusts the fuel and air mixture accordingly. You'll also need a new intake manifold for a 4V carb if that's what you choose to go with.
It's probably going to be a lot more work and a lot more money to convert to carburation than you think. The benefits of doing so are almost nill except that you might be able to better understand your engine and work on it easier. Any type of fuel injection is going to be better on or offroad when compared to carburation. The only venue where carburation would preferred would be racing (sand/mud drags, nascar, alcohol funny cars, etc.).
I'ld gladly give you my 4V carb for your GM TBI.

I can't be the only wheeler out there that want to do this. Na but I priced out both ways to do this and a new comp,sensors,a newer bigger trottle body,it was way more expensive, and I'm on a military budget. As far as emissions,I'm not worried about it, I'm from a small town in Nevada, no emissions there. Which is good.
I know the benefits are pretty scarce w/the carb but the easier trouble shooting is what I'm after. I've been fighting with the whole TBI setup, replacing sensors wires,ect. for the past year. I barely have any hair left. I'll try TPI on my next rig.
I'm set with everything for the engine,intake, carb...... I'm just lost on the wiring is all

Get yourself a good manual for an older Chev. It will have the wiring you need to get your truck running. You will probably have to remove a bunch of wiring and put in a few new one to make it all work right. I would like to help more but I'm a Ford guy, sorry.
As for changing a TBI to a carb, I don't blame you. TBI is crap! It is fuel injection but it is the most primitive kind.
You could convert it to a EFI system, most likely it would be too much trouble but at least check it out.

Thanks hiqum, do you know of any good,cheap manuals out there-beside chilton or haynes? they're good books to have but they're not all that discriptive. I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels the same way about TBI, I did look at EFI, and it was way out of the budget, it would be awesome to have though. Thanks again for the help.

I don't know many other good manuals. If you know a mechanic have them print out some pages for you off of Mitchell or All Data. Either of those will have very good wiring diagrams. Sorry, I can't think of anything better for you.
