Check your vacume tubes. One of them has either fallen off or has dry rotted through.

do you have the 2.5l, 2.8l or 4.3l engine?

Do you have enough transmission fluid? Is your tranny filter clean?
Check to see if your modulator valve(throttle valve) is sticking, it is on the drivers side of your transmission. If you have a 700r4 you may have a TV cable that might be stuck causing your tranny not to shift. if you have the 3 speed auto it uses vacuume to actuate the modulator valve. Sometimes the modulator valve gets dirt in it causing it to stick sometimes you can knock it loose by driving 20 to 30mph and flooring it for a couple of seconds. If you don't have a stuck cable or vacuum leak it is probably the throttle valve. Your valve body will have to be removed to get to it and there are a lot of tiny bearings and springs to loose. A transmission shop should only charge $200 to $300 to replace your modulator valve but if you have alot of miles on it expect them to only do a rebuild because their reputation is on the line. A rebuild should be around $800 to $1100. Good luck.

If you ever have to have your trans. rebuilt make sure that you never go to AAMCO. This place is the biggest rip off ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it is just starting to get low it will not have enough fluid to shift. But if it gets lower (almost empty or empty) it will act like it is in neutral.

thanks again for everyones help but i took it to a friend of mine at cottman they took it out and it turns out there was a crack in the radiator that seperates the tranny cooler from the rest. it was leaking coolant into the tranny causing it to completly rust the insides out but its all good now $1900 later its like a new truck well the motor and tranny atleast but a big thanks anyway.
