look for the 4.0L straight 6 with 5 speed manual.  tcase you i think is maybe the np205 someone correct me if I'm wrong (i dont know if it was stock but thats what my friend has in his jeep he just bought 1993)
lotta aftermarket support for the YJ.  check the axels I'm thinking Dana 30 adn 35s should be on there.
the last wrangler i test drove only had the 4 banger but when you drive it pay attention to what the car is doing.  If its clunking along take a grand off the price, if fluid is leaking into the compartment around the pedals then knock some more cash off.  Dealers are probably looking for about 3grand on those years.  You can easily talk them down to 2 if its not in that great of shape.  (reason i didnt take home the one i test drove was because it wouldnt go over 35 without constantly backfiring and didnt want to come out of 3rd gear plus all the thing i stated before about the fluid and engine)  Always check the 4wd and see if it works.  Just engage it and try to turn in a tight circle.  You should hear the tires chirping, if not then the front tires arent engaged.
as always look at all the fluids, if the oil looks like tar then it obviously hasnt been changed in a while and there is probably good damage to the engine, hoepfully there is oil in there (i've taken dipsticks out that were bone dry) look at the brake fluid level, you want to make sure that you can stop, and make sure that there is coolent.
You can sometimes find one that the previous owner only used to go and get groceries, if that is the case then you lucked out and it should be in great condition.

i think all but one year had np231 t-cases not sure if it is one of those are not but as he said get one with a I-6 but if you have not been there go to jp's web site.  or some of the other web sites of primedia and read more about them just remember about some of the stuff they recomend to put on trucks/jeeps the advirtisers pay for the magazines but the articles usually tell the good and bad points of the jeeps go to www.primedia.com and inthe top right click and scroll down to other 4x4 mags like fourwheeler, off-road, jp and more then when the page comes up down at the bottom there is a spot to click and go to the web site.  Also on here or fourwheeler look at first 4x4s i think this is one they wrote about. hope this helps.
