I have an '88 GMC 1/2 ton reg cab l/b 4x4.  I want to get rid of the IFS and go with a Dana 60 up front and a 14 bolt rear.  I have contacted Off Road Unlimited and got a quote but unfortunately I'm not made of money.  So my question is to whoever may help is......If I was to go to a junkyard and find a 1 ton Chevy with a solid front axle, what years would I need to find to have the Dana 60 I want?  How much of the other stuff would I need to remove to be able to complete the swap; such as springs, steering, tie rods, "transfer case" etc, etc.?  My front drive-line is driver side and I believe all production Dana 60's are passenger side.  Would the transfer case bolt to my tranny?  would I need to shorten my shafts?  I know alot of questions.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

First off, you need to source your D60 from a ford (79 i think) and not a chev if you want to keep your NP241 transfer case.  IFS diff is on the left, so is your ford d60 diff. GM diffs are on the right, you can use em if you swap to a NP205 or a NP208 t-case.

You will have to make a custom steering system out of whatever works effectively from both trucks, springs are a no brainer with leafs, just weld the hangers in the EXACT right spot, new custom front driveshaft and your good to go.

ORU has a kit where you supply the axle, and its just the hangers and steering (crossover) and other little items. But i think it is still big $$$.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help guy.  I take it the NP205 will bolt up to my tranny correctly if I go that route?  ORU may make my life simpler with their swap kit even though it's a bit of dough.

Thanks again

NP205 may or may not bolt up to your 700r4 depending on where you source your np205. I dunno about interchangeability on these t-cases, sorry.

Goodluck.

Unfortunately, you need a FORD axle, that will be easier than changing xfercase and front axle from a GM since the diff is on the wrong (passenger) side. Find a D60 from a F350 (or D50 from a Super Duty).  The has the pumpkin on the driver's side and will bolt up to your xfercase with a new driveshaft.  Springs can be ford or Chevy, you can use the GM stering box, but you'll need to make or buy a cross over steering set up with a steering arm on the passenger knuckle.

I hope that helps.
