i just started working on my 1979 jeep J-10 HONCHO it has the original AMC 360, 3 speed manual transmission transfer case and mismatched axles, the ratios are the same but the previous owner busted the rear end and put in a 5 lug instead. the drivetrain is very strong and i have a 1978 jeep cherokee for parts, unfortunatly i did not know at the time i bought the cherokee that the axles were narrowerand therefore usless to me. im planning on swaping the tranny out of the cherokee because its a 4 speed manual. my question is will this be a problem or will it be a bolt in swap. also i would like to swap the axles for a little more beef and would like info on what is best suited for this swap, it will be used for off-road use and some highway driving to the trails (no trailer queens here) thanks in advance for the wealth of knowledge.
