Can any body help with acouple ?'s ?  I just bought a '79 Toy' 4x4 pickup and im trying to find out what the gearing is in the front and rear. Also does anyone know if the 4 speed tranny can handle 31x10.50 15's or 35x12.50 15's. Any other info pertaining to '79 4x4 pickups would also be helpful.

#1. This isnt the best way to find out but it works you will not get the exact gearing but it will be preaty close I know if you jack up the axle so boath tires are off the ground get someone to help you turn the tires at the same speed and count how many times the yoke turns copmared to 1 full turn of the tires and that is your gearing.

#2. If you are going to change the gears this is the formula is (pinion gear teath divided by ring gear teath) example the pinion gear has 10 teath and the ring gear has 41 teath 41 divided by 10 = 4.10   this is a lot more work but this is the exact way to figure out the gearing make sure they are both the same or stuff will break I hope this helps you out have fun

Ok I have an 80 and am pretty sure its close to yours.  Your first tire size is what I am currently running with no problems.  My research says the 35 are going to be about 5 inches of lift, Gears, and alittle more squirls in the engine bay.  But 33 12.5 are do-able with 3.5 lift and no gear swap.  Bonous on that route is there is no steering geometry problems and as of yet I have no major driveline binding  issues.  I used tough country lift, from suspension conection and was very pleased.  Good luck.
