im lookin for a jeep yj 87-95 and was wonderin if it is vital to opt for the 6 banger, if it is worth extra trouble and money searching for it. or is the 6 cylinder just overkill in sucha small vehicle

YEP, I would go with the six cylinder, you would be power and money ahead. Unless you are going to keep it strickly stock and an in town driver,  but even then the six would still be 100 times more desirable. Unless you are going to completely remove the engine for a custom conversion V-8, then the 4 cylinder Jeeps factory axle gear ratio has an advantage. ALSO, try to look for a later 91 or newer, the engine is a 4.0L HO (high output with fuel injection ect). The earlier ones are 4.2L (AKA the 258) and have a tempermental carburator. You can upgrade the 4.2, but you will probably spend more to do that then buying one with the factory set up in the first place. Hope this helps and WHEEL & DEAL ON DUDE!!
