my 1994 ranger when in 4x4 and turning front end pops, like something is going to break. I have read some topics on auto hubs causing this but mine seems to be very bad. when turning and moving very slow you can feel something binding and then like bang! . feels like axle is binding . if you push in the clutch when it start to bind it will stop the truck and cause it to roll backwards, if you continue to go then it will pop or bang loud. Can someone tell me if this is what the auto locking hubs do when they are bad or could it be in the differential. Does it have spider gears and may be broken. . my son said when watching , it picks up the arm and shock before it pops. what do yall think? can it the locking hubs causing so much noise and binding. thanks in advance robbie

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think your truck has a (Scizzor type) front end like those of the mid 80's models. If so I would start by checking the universal joints in the front axle. If one is seizing then it could cause such a problem. They are a real *** to get out and back in and it should take about a day if you have never done it before. Hope I helped in any way shape or form.

Spend the $15 at the autoparts store on a Haynes manual for your truck. It will be worth it. My first guess would be front axle u-joints, then check your front ring and pinion while you have the front end apart.
Best of luck.

Another hint of advice would be to replace the universals in the drive shafts at the same time as the front end. My Dad does this when he replaces his in his 86 ranger and has never had one go out at the wrong time. Another thing that you may want to check is the tie rod ends because if the front is binding it seems like they would catch hell.
