I have a 1978 F-150 with a 300-6.  I plan on building up my truck for 4 wheeling and street use.  Would it be better to put a TBI 300-6 (I can get one with 20k miles on it, granny driven for about 300 bucks) into it, or go for a V-8 engine?  Everyone I talk to says that you have to have a V-8 to climb worth a crap, but my dad and uncle say that the 300-6 is the best Ford engine to climb with, because it has great low-end torque and "won't spin out".  What is actually the best bet?

My other choice is to rebuild the carb'd 300-6 that's in it right now.....I can't decide which will be better...

As far as a work horse you can't beat a 300 6 cyl. They are torque monsters. As far as 4 wheeling though I would stay with the dependability of a small block 302. The 300 6 cyl can be lugged around and works great for towing and hauling but it lacks in the rpm or rev department. Sometimes having those tires spinning is a good thing. If a 300 6 cylinder is a must however, go with the fuel injected one, They run better on steep inclines and have a little better throttle response.

The benefits of a small block 302 are, more high end power, reliability, after market part availability, and great overall performance. The downfalls would be worse fuel mileage, can't lug a 302 like a 300-6, and because of high part availability too many mods can be done leading to a skinny wallet.

The benefits of a 300-6 are number 1-towing, hauling, fuel mileage, availability of whole complete engines cheap, low maintenance, and can run forever if not abused. The only downfall is that they fall flat on their face on the top end.

Thanks.  This brings a massive amount of clarification to the entire debate I have been having with my friends and family.  They both are right, but for 4-wheeling a 302 is much much better.  Thanks.

when you get older the 300 I-6 will be more appreciated but now you may like v8 but if you go to bigger tires without changing gears the 300 6 will tolerate the high gears better because of the low end torqe and like your people told you i'm sure it will still go through mud.  An older friend with his 79' 300 4-speed 205 dana 44 9" with 4.10s was real good with 38s and go anywhere but now that he is older it still does good with 35 tires and easier for him to get in.  when you get about 45 a inch and a half makes a difference.

the 302 is a great motor but you have a 300 and they will climb just about any thing a four on the floor with the granny gear is great go with the 300 it is the best motor ford ever made as for carb vrs injection I like carbs no computers to deal with and can be easly repaired or just carry a spare
