i don't know anything about carbs or how to tune them. maybe you can help me tune my carter until i can afford something better. i know you can get spring loaded needle and seats. i was told that years ago and now they advertise it  for the new edlebrock offroad carb. i've ran holleys. they always suck. one thing i've done with holleys is extend the vent tubes. they've done that in the offroad carb. i've read that the best of the new carbs for offroad is the new q-jet. right out of the box. (one of the mag's tested them all) holley makes a pro jection for about $700. at least it used to be.

i'm getting my t-case gears tomorrow. should be wheelin' soon.

So you're going for the t-case gear reduction?  Sweet.  I've loved mine.  I think the shift fork is bent though cause it keeps on popping out of 4 lo going uphill.  Where in the Valley do you live.  I'm over in Tempe around McClintock and Broadway.

I remember that carb that the mags tested, I wasn't sure who made it though.  A friend of mine has an older quadrajet on his Scout, and his sucks.  I'm sticking with the carter until I can afford a TBI conversion.

no reduction, just replacing broken gears. i'll still have the 2 to 1(or whatever it is). i would like to, but can't afford it. eventually, i want to get the tera but the funds are limited. i live in peoria. completely on the opposite side of town. once my jeep is running, i will definitely take a trip over to aj, or somewhere on the east side. maybe you can show me around over there. i've had my jeep here since aug. and looking at it sitting in my driveway is making me sick. i haven't even had it out in the best state to 4 wheel in, in the union. 1/2 the reason i took the job and moved here was for off road.

my last d20 popped out of 4 lo too. it is a j,u, or horse shoe style shifter on the jeep. i don't know the scientific name. i just shoved it in 4 lo(right side, all the way forward), wrapped a bungee cord around the shifter and attached it to the firewall to hold it in place. there are detents on the shift rods that may be worn. maybe you can find a way to hold your shift lever in place so vibration doesn't spit it out of 4 lo. it's not the right way but hell, we're not driving 50k hummers. you don't want to rip that t-case apart again, do you?

how involved is the tbi? i've never even considered it. do you think it's very expensive?

No, I really don't want to tear apart the t-case, but I've learned that there are two ways to do things.  The right way, and the wrong way.  I'ld rather pay the price in time and money now then do it later when it pops out when I least expect it and roll my rig.

The TBI isn't as hard as you think.  From what I undestand it'll probably take the better part of a day though.  Granted it's different for every engine.  The company I was looking at didn't give prices, but I've heard them for around $1500.  Some engines are cheaper than others.  For most applications they provide a new intake manifold or will custom build one.  They provide the computer and programmed chip, wiring, and I think the TBI as well.  I suppose you could always buy the off road carb, but there is really no comparison between carburation and having some sort of fuel injection.

i just checked out summit's website to verify. the 275hp projection is $789. they don't list IH for application, but i can't see why it wouldn't work. it just replaces the carb. you may look into that if a tbi is $1500. i think that's what i will eventually do. i'll see if i can make a carb work first though.

i didn't get my t-case gears today. they were more expensive than i thought they would be. gotta wait until friday.

Check www.turbocity.com they offer TBI setups for many applications. $1200-1500 with a custom chip for your application.  He should be able to program for a IH.  Since the TBI uses a wet intake like a carb, it mounts with an adapter plate to your existing intake manifold.  That includes everything that you'll need (except a fuel pump, I think). There are other fuel injection companies like Howell and Fuel Air Spark Technology (FAST) (www.fuelairspark.com) that have pretty serious fuel injection systems.  It just depends on how much you want to spend.

I hear that the Holley Truck Avenger is a good offroad carb, of course the Q-jet is good offroad, too.

The holley 502s tbi system is rated at 275 hp. It will work on any 4 bbl intake, big block or small. The kit include all wiring, adapters, computer, inline fuel pump and even a new filter. Its a very complete kit and it can be ordered from Checkers or any other parts store the sells Holley carbs for $750- $800. The install is extremely staight forward with basic hand tools. The computer has 4 adjusting knobs to set idle, fast idle air fuel mixture and so on. It requires to cold starts to adjust initially. Then its just a matter of fine tuning it.

As far as the carbs are concerned, I love my qjet and wouldn't even think of running another carter or edelbrocck. I have had nothing but problems with them and my qjet has been able to hold up to some really good angles in the rocks. If you wanted to run a holley, just connect your vent tubes with a piece of 3/8 tubing and save yourself $500.00

Cool truck dude!!!  Looks like a real off-road beast!  I've been thinking about installin a high performance Cam for my Chevy 350. Did you notice a big difference in horsepower with this mod ? + how did you get your HP calculations ? (400-425) ?

I agree! get you some Boggers or TSL Thornbirds - both are pretty radical.

Thornbirds are the biggest joke on the market, they perform about the same as at's off road. Lots of people run tsl's in front and boggers in teh back. The boggers are nice tires but can give a lot of bite which is really hard on axles, also they dont steer as well as tsl's or hold (horizontal traction).

What do you think of the MT Baja Claws vs the Procomp Xterrains ?
