Hello I just baught a 1987 toyota truck it has a 6-8 inch lift and 35 inch tires, but I am pretty sure it isnt geared for them. It had trouble climbing hills that were moderately steep there ewas also a fuel leak coming from the injector, we replaced the o-ring and solved that problem, i have not tried it on any hills yet because im in school. Which of these would mostly be to blame. I was told it most likely has 4:10 gear ratio and that might cause it. I was told that 4:88s would work well but another shop told me it would need 700s or 500s what do you think? another friend of mine said replacing the gears in the transfer case would do the same thing. But wouldnt that still put stress on the differential? It is my first toyota and i like it very much the problem is the cost. if i paid a shop to do it, they said it would be a little less than 3000 dollars, and my dad and I are weekend mechanics but are hesatent to undertak a task like this.it is IFS so there are a lot of things in the way of the front axle. I am sorry for the length of my questions and hope someone will have the heart to help out a confused and poor highschool kid who has a passion for wheelin.

I have a 1994 Toyota truck that was running 35x16x15 Boggers and I ran 5.29 gears.  It is a V6 and I also have another truck that is running stock gears with a V6 that was able to pull the same tires with no problems in low range, but I put the same tires on my 1988 4Runner 4 cylinder and could barely get the truck to take off, much less wheel with it.  The injector leaking could have been the problem, but you did not say whether you have a 4 or 6 cylinder.  Gears in the transfer case would likely be the way to go because it would not effect your highway speeds or rpms. But as you know it is going to be cheaper to update the gears in the diffs.  I have not performed this mod myself, but I have helped friends do it.  Just take your time and pay attention to the disassembly.  Make sure to have a book handy as well as instructions from the gears if they come with any.  The size of your motor and the number of modifications you are willing to do to it performance wise will be the determining factors as far as how low a gear ratio you will want to run.  My truck with the gears also had a set of headers, complete exhaust, and a K&N filtercharger system on it.  Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions.

thank you for the info. the motor in my truck is the 2.4 litre 22-RE 4 cylinder although there is a lack of gittyup, im doing fairly well with it as a daily driver. After fixing the fuel leak, it did a little better on the hills. And I am wondering if it has deeper gears (if thats the correct term) than the stock 4:10s so I was wondering if there is a way to determine what set of gears are in it. Also I measured the gas mileage yesterday and it was about 23 miles per gallon we filled it up and after fixing the fuel leak, Ive gone 36 miles and i'm alraedy down to about half tank. I have an 11 gallon tank, so thats about 7 mpg which is just as bad as my 87 V8 ramcharger i just sold. I put in  some STP fuel injector cleaner in but that shouldnt have any effect on the mileage should it? also when ever i open the driver side door, it makes an extremely annoying buzzing sound  the people before me had the button in the doorjam glued down but it fell off it does stop when i start the truckso im just wondering if thats normal because it gets oldwhen I'm working on the inside of my truck.also how do the locking hubs work, my last trucks diddnt have them.

4.88 will work out good for you with a 22-re running 35's. If you have not re-geared a truck before i would take it in and have it done, would hate for things to go bad for you deep down a nasty trail. the gear code should be posted on the driver side door jam. For 4.10 it will be one of these:
BO3A    4.10   2 pinion open   7.5" ring gear
BO3B 4.10 4 pinion open 8" ring gear
BO3C 4.10 2 pinion posi

If you have an open diff (with locker), jack up the rear end of your truck, one side only. Both sides if you have a limited slip.

Put a visible mark on the driveshaft.

Spin the tire that's in the air two full turns. While doing that count how many times the driveshaft rotates while spinning the tire twice. Of course, pay attention to the mark you put on the shaft beforehand.

4 full turns on the shaft and a little more (4.10's).

your locking hubs both need turned to lock to put it in to 4 wheel drive...DONT JUST TURN ONE...

I take it your talking about the door buzzer..just cut the wire to the buzzer. dont cut the one to the switch cause your door light turns on with it. well hope this help a little, go to http://www.tacomaterritory.com/ for any toyota gearing help you might need.

one more thing, your 35 are having a lot if not all to do with low power and gas mileage. until you re-gear thats a lot of rubber to turn. if the truck came with 29 inch tires and then had 35 put on with stock 4.10 gears that would work out to 3.4 Actual axle gear Ratio. So with that said 4.88 would get you very close to the power and gas mileage you had at stock. the math works out to 4.95 ratio (4.88 is as close as your going to get) to get you back to the feel of 29 inch tires at 4.10 gearing. Hope this helps

thank you very much for the info. Although it will be a while until I can go offroading because my truck had an engine fire. I couldnt get the tranny into gear when i was stopped, even though I was pushing the clutchall the way. It died and and when i tried to restart it, it shook a lot and wouldnt start then smoke came out of the hood I diddnt have a fire extenguisher or a cellphone. Luckily, some construction workers were near by and we got the fire put out. the strange thing is we had fixed its fuel leak 3days before that. so its getting it looked at to see what hoses and wires need to be replaced. And we will hopefully be able to be replaced.

I hope you got it out before to much stuff got melted. Sounds like your looking at getting a new clutch to...them darn 35's sure eat clutches fast until you re-gear. well good luck to you.

The 4.88's sound good, but if u want to be easier on the motor, clutch and the whole truck then I would go with 5.29 gears. Thats just an opinion, but I was extremely happy with my 5.29's because my truck would walk through any mud I put it in. You may also consider putting in a Centerforce or a heavy duty clutch in dealing with the 35 inch tires. The four banger is a great motor with lots of torque, but it only puts out 85 horses in stock form. Too bad about the motor fire, but once you get it checked out, it should last you a long time. The fuel my have soaked into some lines, or there may have been oil that caused the fire. It could be many things. Be sure to clean the motor very well before running it again.
