Best all purpose 4x4 mods?

We had a good debate about mud vs. rock but how about all us guys that do everything with our trucks?  What do you think is the best modification to make your truck worthy of all conditions?

My favorite mod is the locked Dana 70 in the rear.  It is tough enough to tow and keeps me from having to lock in the hubs for that little stuff that'll spin one wheel.

How about it, what do you guys recommend?

I'm with higum.  I think that a locker or two will get you more places than any other modification.

I'm sure we all want chicks to dig our trucks, but most of them are into shiny trailer queen trucks not real 4x4's.

Get some dents in your rig and mud on the hood!

dude,

just a joke, supposed to be funny. if you saw my jeep you probably wouldn't let me park it in your driveway. it does have 2 chamber flowmasters though.

on a serious note. traction devices are the best mod. my rear is locked and i plumbed sandrail turning brakes to my front brakes. it's only 3 wheel drive but i can choose the 3 wheels. as far as mud on my hood, i've had to shovel out the inside and squeegie off the out side so my 460 ford had enough power to "Trailer Queen" it home. how about you?

My F-150(extremely modified) lives on mud!  It won't ever be a trailer queen but it has pulled more than a few trailers.    As the forum suggests I use it for anything and everything.  Its a  rockcrawlin', mud boggin', trail ridin', tough truckin', dune jumpin' offroad machine.  Oh, its also a daily driver minus the occasional excessive abuse breakage.

Another favorite mod of mine is the aftermarket radio, amp and subs.  You gotta be able to here the radio over the tires, right?

And you are correct, I wouldn't let you park your Jeep in my driveway.  There is a perfectly good mudhole ten feet away!

i've used my jeep for the same, except rockcrawling but i plan to start. i've done most of the damage tuff truck racing. that gets expensive. i'm down with the tunes but ahead of it i think a good soft suspension with traction links to control axle wrap is a great mod. i bought my jeep with an old school 4" spring under. it beat the piss out of my kidneys(literally). especially in the dunes with all the wheel hop. when i softened it up, i had a lot better control of the rig, especially in off camber situations. when i get to the top of a hillclimb, instead of hopping the traction links force the torque straight to the ground. and i don't have to walk with a cane for the next few days after a wheelin' trip.

as far as trailering, lighten up. a lot of guys who trailer just can't afford to get the rig up to street legal standards(emissions, lights, flares, mudflaps, etc.) or want to pay the extra $50-$100 a month to insure it. there's a difference between trailering to a car show and trailering to trailhead or a race. i trailer because with a wife and 2 kids, i can't afford to have my DD sitting in the driveway with the t-case cracked in 2, or add yet another vehicle to the allstate policy. you guys take a lot of pride in driving to the trail, wheelin' it, and driving to work on monday covered in mud. that's cool. for me, i don't think it matters how you got there as long as you're there.

That's a really good point.  Truth be told, I wish I could afford to make my Scout a trail only rig.  Ah, a truck with ac, am/fm/cd w/ good speakers, weather stripping, and no rust.  Maybe one of these days.

For the people who don't get out much:

A trailer queen is a SHOW'N SHINE!!!

I have no problem with trail rigs, but I asked about all purpose trucks.  How come you take offense so quickly?  If you don't know what a term means don't get all ticked off.

If you want to compare trail rides to daily drivers you could start a new post.  I might start one for that too.

i wasn't ticked off or bent out of shape in any way. sorry if it sounded like that. just trying to make points of view and keep them brief and clear.

as far as the term trailer queen. i'm fully aware of what it means and how it started. it just seems that lately the line has been getting blurred (by nice looking, trail only, tube rigs, tj's, toyata's, etc.)on what is a trailer queen. most of the criticism comes from street legal mud guys like yourself. sorry if i assumed you felt as they do. you can see that attidude a little in sk's post. it's lame if it's got any chrome or paint if it's on a trailer. i've got chome wheels so that makes my jeep a trailer queen to him and many like him. even a lot of my buddies. maybe you should start another thread, i'd be curious to what people have to say.

next mod. axle gears

It's all good guys.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.  I have no problem with chrome- Weld wheels being my favorite chrome item.  They are for looks but they are tough as nails too.

Valleycat if you weren't from Cali your rig probably would fit in this post just as well as mine.  I'll try to be more clear next time around.

i'm not from cali. washougal,wa but i live in phoenix now. i've rolled and endo-ed my jeep tuff truck racing on the MX track up there(separate occasions). straightened the frame out with a railroad tie, chains, and a press jack in my driveway. can i stay now?

Sure, anyone is welcome.  I just assumed from the CA in your name and the road legal mentions you made that you were from Cali.  I didn't know you would have trouble with emissions and stuff in other states.

Sounds like you could use a defensive driving course though! LOL
