i have a 87 dodge ramcharger i would like to know what is involved in doing away with the cad unit and putting a one piece shaft in , am i going to have to get a new axle housing

Check Warn or Moser for one piece axles.  I read an article once about the swap you are thinking of.  I think it was from Warn for the D60, with a D44 kit in the works. It works in the same axle housing, with a special bearing surface machined in the axleshaft.  The kit should come with a block off plate for the Central Axle Disconnect.  I'm not sure, but I think you'll need locking hubs to complete the swap.  Anybody else out there know about the kit?
