Hey guys i bought a 92 Chevy k1500 Pickup for 700 dollars. the motor is blown. the block is still salvageable but i dont know what else is salvageable in it. the truck is in nice condition. as far as i know the rest of the truck works good. it has 150,000 miles on it. ok heres the deal.
OPTION 1: i am considering buying a gm preformance parts ht383 crate engine to put in it and save some time. but the only thing holding me back is the price-$4000. if i get that motor i want to get a new 670cfm tbi unit to alow for the more airflow the motor is going to need. thats another $370. i also plan on in the next 5 years getting an msd ignition box for off road users. thats another $250 and i would want the rev controller which is a $110 unit. now i would probably buy the motor this summer and get the tbi next summer depending on how it runs with the stocker. like i said the ignition box would be in the next 5 years. so would i be worthit to go this rought?
OPTION 2: here i would pull the stock motor and rebuild it with sum fairly good parts. would it be worthit to put in a 383 stroker kit, bore the motor and do a low torque cam in this engine? or should i just see if the stock crank is still useable and just use that and put in some good rods n pistons. also if i rebuild this motor i plan on just getting some gm preformance parts cast iron fast burn cylinder heads for $520.
the rest of the truck is pretty much stock. it has catback dual exaust with resonator tips. i am thinking about getting some doug thorley headers within the next couple years. Also i have a k&n air filter that came with the truck BUT i dont think i am going to use it because they filter LESS air and let MORE dirt into the engine :S. if i go on long road trips i may put it in for the mileage and there is less dirt.
i am currently 16 and work at my uncle's shop full time and he is a very experienced mechanic so i can likely get the stock one built up for free labor. this summer im getting 6.50 an hour so about every 2 weeks i get 500 bux. i also have about $2500 saved up. so i can probably buy the crate motor but im thinking the stock motor would be less to build but on the other hand i think the crate motor comes with warranty and its new.
so i really need help deciding on this if anyone has any suggestions please help
Thanks in advanced

It sounds to me that if you have access to a sshop and free labor the rebuild it your self is the way to go. I priced the GM Motor Sports 350 and a rebuild of my 350 and there was only about $200.00 more for the brand new 350 with a 12 month 50,000 mile guarntee. Good luck.

the big thing to me is new parts vs. used and new parts and warranty vs. no warranty but with all the machine work to do to bore out the block and clearance it for a stroker kit how much would that cost around?

what are some good parts to use to put together a good 350 motor i want it to have a little more power than stock but i dont wanna hafta reprogram the computer if i dont hafta. can i put a low end torquing cam in it and get by with out reprogramming or can i buy one of those lil chips that plug into the ecm or what?

hey guys heres my update:
i gotta remanufactured crate 350 for my truck and put it in a couple weekends ago. just a regular 350. now that ive talked to some people i have figured out that this truck has been thrashed pretty dang hard. it has a whole new beefed up heavy duty front suspension, cranked up torsion bars and a different used rear end. the old one waz run dry a few times. it also has a catback dual exaust or should i say a cherry bomber-back dual exaust because the cat was removed and replaced with a cherry bomber. it also has them resonator tips on it too. right now i am running 235/75R15 tires on it as they had alotta tread on them and they were cheep used tires so when i have to get new tires im getting some 31 10.50's for it. i am running the tires on old stock rally rims off of the old chevy trucks. but when i have to change brakes soon i will probably have to get some of those small like 1/4" spacers or something because they are pretty close to not clearing and ill probably get some 1.5" spacers for the rear rims so they track with the front. it has one of those fiberglass cab thingy's on it so i put 4 kc 100watt 6" lights on it (reallly nice). the truck also has dual batteries but did they come factory with small wires and a solenoid to hook up the 2nd battery?
well i think that is about it thanks for your help and suggestions are welcome and ill post some pix hopefully in a couple days here

I'd go with the stock rebuild 383 stroker kit, and do it yourself with the free expert help ya got. You can learn a whole lot by doing it yourself, and gain a whole lot of knowledge from the experience. If you do it right you shouldn't need that warranty, except for the kit parts ya get. I'd go with the full 383 stroker kit and get rid of all the stock parts. You'll have a stupid grin on yer face for a long time once you feel that true stroker power! You can always do add-ons later as you can afford like headers, true dual exhaust, msd ignition, or a 750 cfm (overkill) Holley carb. Just some ideas for ya.
