I am getting ready to start a Jeep, AMC 304 V-8, after it has
been sitting for approx. two (2) years. What is the best way to
pre lube the cylinders before starting. It is not a new rebuild, just
been sittin. Thanks........T

use a drill and a long flat bit. pull the distributer and use the drill to spin the oil pump while your doing this have your sparkplugs out and turn the engine over with a ratchet.

priming the oil pump is a good idea. i don't know what the off the shelf stuff is but i've sprayed wd-40 in the holes when it was gonna sit it and had good results.

Yeah, get that stuff on the shelf! What stuff, I'm not sure, but...
As long as it looks like WD-40 (or Marvel Mystery oil works good too). Take out the sparkplugs and spray a bunch in the the cylinders and let it sit for a bit. It probably wouldn't hurt to change the oil first, you don't want to suck all the sludge and crap out of the pan back up into the engine! I used a piece of 3/8 steel rod ground down flat on one end (like a screwdriver) and a drill to prelube the engine. Reinstall the distributor set the timing and crank away. Also, don't forget fresh gas, check your filters and drain any old gas out before you start, that will help, too. Once you get it running again, I would change all the fluids, oil, tranny, xfer case, axles, radiator, etc.
