...or into however you look at it.

To all of you on this listserve who drive SUV's and Hummers. Here is how Tom Friedman, NYTimes columnist (and supporter of the war) described you folks:

"Yes, I want to drive the mother of all gas-guzzlers that gets so little mileage you have to drive from gas station to gas station. Yes, I want to drive my Hummer and never have to think that by consuming so much oil, I am making transfer payments to the worst Arab regimes that transfer money to Islamic charities that transfer money to madrassas that teach children intolerance, antipluralism and how to hate the infidels.

And when one day one of those madrassa graduates goes off and joins the jihad in Falluja and kills my neighbor's son, who is in the U.S. Army Rangers, I want to drive to his funeral in my Hummer. Yes, I want to curse his killers in front of his mother and wail aloud, "If there was only something I could do ..." And then I want to drive home in my Hummer, stopping at two gas stations along the way." (NY Times 11/25/04)

So all of you who drive those gas-guzzlers, you are consorting with the enemy. You are terrorists yourselves. You are evil doers and immoral. That is wrong. Very wrong. This country is addicted to oil, and our dealers are the terrorists and their countries. Not many addicts tell the truth to their dealers.

But, I guess as long as the gays dont get married you are living moral lives, although morality is a relative term and depends on the situation. Kind of like we used to lynch, rape, and kill the blacks, but it was moral at that time too.

Also, Tom Delay stays in charge as House leader (although he's about to be indicted, and the Repubs changed the rules FOR him) we are a shining beacon of democracy to the world.

When this country went into Iraq a 50 cent a gallon tax on gas should have become the law. This money would have gone to the engineering schools throughout this country so that our brightest minds could develop some alternative(s) to our oil addiction and continue giving our money to the terrorists. Show some good old American ingenuity and overcome out problem. We cannot even begin to be even handed in our relations with the middle east when we are addicted to oil. Like I said earlier, and it bears repeating, addicts never tell the truth to their dealers.

But hey folks, you all voted for your candidate, you are stuck with him. So when the next terrorist attack comes, maybe you all will wake up.

Not all of us voted for this candidate. Some of us live outside the US. Some of us already pay insanely high fuel prices.

why would you even post that?

i hate how uninformed people can be. what in the hell should we do? drive tiny *** cars to save some oil? oh yeah then were buying from another country and not helping ourselves. then since no one would buy a domestic vehicle millions of people will be out of business. <?xml:namespace /><o />

can you imagine how hard it would be to find work with millions and millions of people out of work. <o />

people that build the cars, make the steel, and other countless jobs that revolve around only domestic cars. <o />

then once the foreign company’s know they have us by the balls they can charge outrageous amounts for a car that burns a little less then before.<o />

Hmm, well Tom Friedman is certainly entitled to his opinion... I'm sure that the oil companies and auto makers (US and otherwise) will milk our reliance on fossil fuels to the last penny before providing a equitable alternative such as hydrogen or fuel cell technology that will provide the horsepower and torque that we crave, not some battery powered econo-box on wheels.

The most recent issue of Faux Wheeler (Jan 05?) has a good article on the outlook of 4WD "hybrid vehicles".

SKblazer has a point also, what are we to do? Completely forsake our own economic well-being to drive a foreign econo-box? Of course in today's global economy, with Nissans and Toyota's built in the US and Fords and Chevy's being built in Mexico and Canada, what is a domestic auto maker? My truck was built in Ft Wayne Indiana....

Here's more food for thought from Jan 2005 sister mag Off-Road's editorial on page 6 written by Phil Howell.

"In the Atlantic Monthly, Eric Alterman notes that Laurie David, wife of Larry David and among Hollywood's wealthy elite owing to Seinfeld royalties, has become an influential environmental crusader, but herself travels in chartered Gulfstream jets.  Laurie David has organized numerous celebrity save the environment events and 'reviles the owners of SUVs as terrorist enablers, yet gives herself a pass when it comes to chartering one of the most wasteful uses of fossil fuels imaginable,' a private jet Alterman writes. I did a few quick calculations...the Gulfstream G200...would burn around 1,200-1,500 gallons flying [ONE-WAY] from New York to Los Angeles.  A Hummer driven 15,000 miles, the average put on a car per year, would burn around 1,250 gallons of fuel.  So, for Laurie David to take one crosscountry flight in a Gulfstream is the same, in terms of Persian Gulf dependance and greenhouse-gas emmissions, as if she drove a Hummer, for an entire year. But then, conservation is what other people should do."

As Americans, (and other free countries like our Canadian brothers to the north (rockonmoab)) we have the freedom to drive what ever vehicle that we want, and modify it with in the confines of the laws of the particular state.  So if you want to drive a super econo-box, or a giant monster truck gas guzzler, that is your choice.

Personally, I don't think that my $50 bucks in gas is solely responsible for funding Al-Queida, and if it is, when I deploy over there next month, I'll kick their butt and take it back plus interest!

guys like that piss me off.  just lookin to stir some trouble and get readers.  He brings that argument to me, I've got the answer for him.  Why guzzle the gas in my truck when i can sip it on my bike?  More fuel eficent than 80% of cars and a hell of a lot faster.  But the bike cant take me through 2 feet of mud or across a creek.  Why drive my truck?  Why read?  Why watch tv, go on picnics?  Becasue its something you would enjoy.  Not going to change what i do for some writer.  Maybe i'll roll up to his house and tear up his lawn :>

Except for people who live at high altitudes, alcohol would make an excellent fuel. I think the people who make cars in Detroit have ties themselves to "oil barons" and that's why they wont make a pure-alcohol car. If there were as many places to buy alcohol as gas, I'd buy alcohol even at the same price. As an octane rating, it's like 200; it is a pure anti-knock compound. You could probably run a small-block Chevy at 15:1 compression and still not be pushing the motor too hard even while towing.

How about instead of blaming car (or truck) owners for using gas, blame the industry itself; inlcuding foreign car makers too for making the Arabs richer!
