I have a 92 k1500 with a 700r4 trans. Everything I have read says my truck has a 4L60E, except the pan bolt pattern matches 700r4 and only 700r4 filters fit. I guess I got a 91 trans in my 92 truck (which GM is famous for).
I am aware that a 4L60E is basically a computer controlled 700r4.
Anyhow, I installed a B&M shift kit (street and strip). It made a big difference, but has also created a new gear between 3rd and OD. Sounds crazy? I think so. Pulling uphill at 65mph my truck will be doing 1600rpm in OD, it then shifts, with a solid klunk like it should, into this "new gear" and does 2000rpm at 65mph. If i then manually (or let the trans automatically) shift to drive (3rd) i get another shift to 2400rpm, still at 65 mph. I have adjust the TV (throttle valve) cable as B&M suggests to no avail.
Mathematically, if OD is 0.70:1 and 3rd is 1:1, 2400rpm in 3rd equates to 1680rpm in OD, where does this "shift" to 2000rpm come from?
I am a manual transmission guy and need a lesson on "lock-up" and "non lock-up" torque converters. Basically whats teh difference, and what have i got?
All you help will be greatly appreciated.

I am by no means an auto trans guy, but I'll take a gues at it.
I don't know weathr you have one or not, but it sounds like the extra "shift" you are feeling is the convertor unlocking. think of it like this, OD and cruising, the convertor is locked; start up a hill, convertor unlocks, and RPM goes up a bit. then trans down shifts to 3rd. that unlock may feel like an extra shift.
when the convertor is unlocked, there is only a fluid coupling from the engne to the trans (kinda like slipping the clutch in a stick, not all engine power is geting to the trans) when the convertor locks, you're geting full power from engine to trans.
like I said, I'm not by any means an auto trany expert, just trying to help out.

Something else to check on is this--Do you have electronic overdrive? it could be the comp. telling your over drive crossed signals and it's sort of slip shifting. What this will do (if it's what it is ) is adventually burn up your overdrive because of the kit you put in. you might have to put a larger switch in it to cover the kit differance. The kit allows more fluid to pass through the tranny which maybe be the problem for the overdrive ,Good luck

Like i said, my truck was SUPPOSED to come with a 4L60E, which is computer controlled, but has a 700r4 which doesn't have any sort of electronics associated with it.
My trans fluid has 20,000mi on it since the shift kit and is still clean, bright red, and doesnt smell burnt at all.
I think i'll drive drive my newly found TH700r5 the way it is until OD is completely gone.
Can anybody still expalin the Lock-up nonlock-up torque converters to me? And which would my 92 700r4 have?
I want my sm465 back.

the torque convertor uses fluid (instead or a clutch) to transfer torque from the engine to the transmision. a lockup convertor is the same as a non lockup convertor, except that it has a "lockup clutch" that, at a predetermined point, locks the engine to the trans. kinda like a regular clutch dose with a manual trans.
check out this link, it can explain it beter than I can.

hope this sheds some light,
