What obsticles must I consider when swapping out a TH350 for a 700-R4?

Application: '77 K10, long bed

Transfercase: NP 203

Engine: 350ci

I have questions about: adapters, relocating transfercase mounts, will the hole for the shift lever need to be enlarged, shortening/lengthing drive shafts... and many more.

Any help outlining this project would be appreciated.

hey my brother and i just installed a 700r4 in place of his th350. His is a '77 chevy shortbed with a 203 transfer case. so the two trucks are almost identical. The major issue that we ran into while doing this conversion, was the fact that the transfer case now sat about 3'' farther back than it used to, so the shifter hole had to be enlarged. so i expect that you will have to do the same. also your going to have to extend and alter the bends in your tranny cooler lines because they now come up short as well. now for mounting purposes the cross member will also have to get moved. but thats just positioning and redrilling some new holes, not a big deal( actually that is probably the fastest part of this conversion). i wish that i could tell you the exact specs that my brother and i used but we also change to custom crossmembers that we built so ours was mounted differently than yours will be. all and all this project only took us about 7 hours to do on a saturday night. but it was well worth it for the added strenghth and lower gears. i hope that i was of some help, if you would like to talk further or have any question, you can e-mail me at Nebakannezer@yahoo.com

Thanks for the info.  Another question for you:  Do you have any problem shifting into first gear?  Let me clairify: can you pull your shift lever down to a position so that the tranny goes into first?  I understood that the shift colum was built with the TH 350 in mind and with the new 700-R4 having 4 gears you can't lock it (manually shift) into first.

Also, what about driveline lengths?  Any mods there?

i was thinking about doing the same for better mileage, but was told that the 700 trans is weak.  which is opposote of what the other guys said so i'm not sure which is right.  but if you do go with this instal i'd be very interested in hearing how it all worked out.  good luck
