i OWN A 1979 FORD F150 4X4. iT HAS A 300 INLINE SIX NOW BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SWAP IT OUT FOR A 351m. i already have the engine and motor mounts but i need to know what adapters i have to buy to bolt it on to the stock four speed tranny because the 351 was originally mated to a c-6 tranny. also is it possible to use the exsisting flywheel or will i have to get a new one?

you will have to have the bellhousing a 400 bellhousing will work then you will have to have a flywheel I believe a 400 will also work you will also have to have the bracket with the pivot ball for the clutch linkage as far as the motor mounts move them backward and re drill the holes you will also need a different radaitor                                                             hope this helps

A 400 belhousing will mate to my tranny? ok but why do i need the flywheel fom the 400 as well? arent the 351M and the 400 the same block. i have the flywheel that came with the 351M will that work? if not, then why?

the bell housing bolts to the tranny with four bolts it will change I done the same swap when i put a 460 in my 79 4x4 as far as the flywheel you can use one fron a 351 but it has to be for a standard I understood that you had one for an automatic   by the way why are u pulling the six they are one of the best engines ford built

OK SO ALL I NEED IS A BELHOUSING OFF OF A 400 TO MATE THE 351M TO MY FOUR SPEED ALONG WITH A FLYWHEEL FOR A MANUAL TRANNY? IM SWAPING OUT THE SIX FOR AN EIGHT BECAUSE I CANT PULL ENOUGH POWER OUT OF IT. I ALSO DONT HAVE ENOUGH RPM RANGE IT REDLINES AT ABOUT 4000 RPM I KNOW I COULD DROP IN A SET OF 4.11 GEARS INSTEAD OF THE STOCK 3.50 BUT THIS WOULD FURTHER DROP MY TOP SPEED ON THE FREEWAY WHICH IS ALREADY AT 60 MPH WITH 33' TIRES I ALSO ONLY GET ABOUT 8-10 MPG ON A GOOD DAY AND I HAVE HAD IT CHECKED BY A MECHANIC AND THE CARB IS ADJUSTED PROPERY WITH NO FLOAT STICKING AND NO ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS EITHER NOBODY KNOWS WHY IT GETS SUCH BAD MILAGE I FIGURE WITH ALL THAT IT WOULD JUST BE CHEAPER TO SWAP ENGINES TO BETTER MATCH MY SETUP.

DO YOU KNOW THE SPECS ON THE 351M AS FAR AS STOCK HORSEPOWER RATING AND RPM RANGE?

I dont know the specs on the 351 but was wondering if you had checked the exhaust system I was getting 17 mpg and could pull my bass boat 75mph with no problem. I had the block bored 30 the head shaved 10 and swapped the cam was running a one barrel and straight exhaust was also running 33s good luck with your engine swap

yes i have redone the exaust system and am running 2 1/2" pipes with a 40 series flowmaster. i think the problem as far as the six goes is its not the original six. i think that it was either a fuel injected engine or a late model that was supposed to have emissions on it and scince my truck is a 79 it didnt come stock with all the emmisions equipment on it. the head is different than the stock one because it has either heat riser ports or they are fuel injection ports i still havent been able to find out which one it is. so instead of trying to find new parts im just swapping in a different motor. its too bad because i was going to build the original engine if you have a 79 or earlier 300-I6 you can build them to eat up 460's ive seen it there good motors oh well thanks for the info

Incase your still wondering, the rpm range is about 3,500 and at that point, your engine is screaming. i don't know the horse power rating, but i do have a 351m in my 79 bronco, it has a edlebrock perfomer intake, 650 carb and air cleaner, and it has lots of power to turn my 35" mud tires, but it has terrible fuel economy, so i really hope your not getting your hopes up.
