I have a '98 Silverado Ext. cab short bed. I'm on my 3rd 4L60E, and since I hate Automatics anyway, but love my truck, I'd like to convert to a manual. I've found I need an NV3500, but what about using an NV4500? Will my current transfer case work, or will I need to change that, too? What transfer case do I have? Also, will my computer work with these components, or will I have to change that, too? Any help, please!

As much as I love the NV 4500 in my 3/4 ton, if your not going to do any hard core offroading, heavy pulling, or anything else to put a huge strain on the tranny, I would go with the NV 3500.  Your wallet will thank you.   The NV 4500 in the most basic sense is the 3 spd w/compound low with overdrive added (L 1 2 3 OD).  All the pulling power of the old 3 spd, but much better highway mileage, but you have to remember that if you tow anything with it you can't shift to overdrive, and don't have the luxury of 4th for highway towing.  When I tow with mine I stay in the right lane and run about 55 to 60.  However, if your like me and aren't concerned with slightly larger fuel costs, then by all means do the NV 4500.  As far as hooking either up, you will definitley need a flywheel instead of the flexplate, as well as the hydraulic assembly and clutch assembly, and probably new driveshafts.  You shouldn't need any adapters unless either tranny wasn't used for that year (I can't remember, I have a 93).  I don't see why your computer should be an issue.  I don't believe they have anything to do with the manual.  I assume you have explored the cost of this conversion as manuals in general are not cheap, due to there longevity.  Plus labor if you don't intend on doing it yourself.  Whatever you decide, good luck.

I had another thought.  I know you said you hated autos, but have you thought about going to a 4L80E.  I would imagine it would be much less than a conversion and it is supposed to be a fairly stout auto.
