i like smaller suv's. no suburban's or excursions.  jeep suv's, x terra's, land rovers, toyota's, sami's. they're more manuverable, because they're smaller. you can squeeze between trees and rocks easier. you have better vision of obstacles because there is less sheetmetal to try to see around, the lighter weight is easier on parts and the enviornment. and approach and departure angles are usually better with an suv. i just realized i'm comparing small suv's to fullsize trucks. downsize pickups have all the same advantages of downsize suv's. except departure angle from the bed hanging off the back. that's just for the type of 4 wheeling i like to do. if i was a mudder, i would want a fullsize truck with a huge engine, big fat meats, and loud exhaust.

Both have pros and cons.  With a big truck you can grab a whole lot of power and throw some big rubber on it easier than in an suv. THis would be good for getting through the mud and sand.  The SUV is more of an allaround 4wheeler since you can put them through the same stuff you'd put a big truck through and then go places where big trucks cant.  It all depends on what kind of wheelin you're doing.  For mud and prerunnin use a pickup, for trials and rocks take the suvs

Pick up, definitely.  I like being able to through all my muddy tools and parts into the back instead of having to dig around inside an SUV to find them.  Plus, I can haul all the long and tall loads an SUV can't.  They are usually better for working on too.

its what you like its your style, or finding that style.

pickups are good you can carry your junk - but that junk will have mud allover it making it junkier junk.

suvs are good you can toss people in the back keep whatever you want dry and not have to worrie about people stealing things out of the bed

personally I like an older style of suv such as a ford bronco or a chevy blazer. You have most of the attributes of a pickup but in suv form. You can carry passengers and your gear and keep it all out of the elements or you can pop the top off fold the backseat forward(or remove it) and use the truck like a short box pickup if you have to. At the same time you can still use it for towing heavy laods, unlike a smaller suv. It is wider than a small suv but shorter than a fullsize pickup with a much smaller wheelbase. I have a 78 ford bronco and the wheel base is only 104 inches. Great for wheeling! At the same time if you don't need a vehicle for towing or carrying a lot of people or gear or you live in an area where you wheel around boulders or through tight trails you might want a small suv. Plus a small suv is a little cheaper to run. All depends on what you need and where you wheel. Hope this helps, and good luck!

I have had a full size and an suv i have found that the best offroad vehicle is a jeep cherokee or a wrangler.  suvs have a high center of gravity and not much power,  the full size truch is to large to manuver very well offroad.  a friend of mine has a 79 f-150 with a 460 and it is a flare side and it goes good offroad.  but my wrangler is the best enough power low center of gravity plenty of mods and short wheel base awsome steering radius.  but the piont comes to if you want the best all around go with a 4.0 ford ranger mine goes good plenty of power excellent steering radius.  but the mods are limited.  i hope this helps a little.  send me a copy of your report please.   moses21502@yahoo.com

Rednck Cowboy I think that smaller is more manuverable like a short bed truck I might of bought a Jeep but  I was'nt quiet sure I wanted a cherokee and the other kind of jeeps were around $5000.0 I bought a longbed Ford for everyday use hauling loads gravel, straw ,and so on I've got some deep scratches in my nice paint job going in some tight areas but it's a truck  I'm going to enjoy off road or on no pussing around with my rig.MNT RAT

ok cowboy,, im from kentucky and i am a TRUE REDNECK,, here is my opinion , i own and 1980 chevy short wheel base 4x4.. love it,, its my baby, its big and has lots of power, big mudders and i have no problems toying in the mud with it,, and on the other hand i have a 1997 GMC surburban it is also a 4x4 love going mudding in it,, but not to the extream,, both have there pirks but if your going to take some ladies out for the evening in the mud buy an suv,, it makes  a much better ride for them.  getting to the point, its preference man , i choose both.

Trucks all the way man!
I would take a GMC pickup to a Blazer or a Kia anyday....SUV's weren't made for offroading, in my mind anyway. I'd rather a pickup and oddly enough even a jeep....and jeeps are for girls...but that's not saying much cause i'm a chick:P

suv's are for women..hahahah only kidding.
p/u's are the best. you can have fun in them, you can use them to haul whatever for work/play.
you can put a cab on the back if you need one.
Ive always had p/u's and will do till I die.

It all comes down to personal preference.  I have all full size: a suburban, 2 1-ton crew cabs, 2 Blazers and several standard cab pickups, both 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton.  A small suv is in the plans also.  Pick the brand that you like, and the wheel base that you want, the power that you want, and so-on.  Build it to suit your needs.  Any brand of vehical can be an awesome off road rig if it is well engineered, well built, and well maintained.
