I have an 84 toyota truck with 38.5 tires on it.  Im not sure what the gears are but it seams to not have much trouble pulling the tires.  The past couple of times i have went wheeling, it has been making a loud grinding/winding noise when under alot of strain.  It almost sounds like the noise that you get when you are in reverse, but alot louder.  it does this only in 4 wheel drive worse than when in 2 wheel.  The only time that it makes this noise in 2 wheel drive is if you let out on the clutch hard taking off or if you are on the gas hard goeing into second gear.  it sounds like it is coming from the trasfer case to me, but any suggestions would help.

The tranny should have a fill plug somewhere near the top of it similar to the rear diff...

I could be wrong though, hopefully a Yota guy will chime in with the correct answer..
