question concerning mercury mountaineer

Don't laugh, but I need to know how good a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer will go through beach sand. We live in southeastern N.C. & can get permits to drive out on many different beaches in this area. If the sand is dry it can be like sugar with deep ruts. I own a Ford f-150 7700 package & don't have any problem , might have to let some air out of the tires when sand is dry. My wife is interested in buying herself a Mountaineer to drive to work & to drive on the beach if I'm busy doing other things. The Mountaineer has a 4.6 V8 with AWD. There is nothing to turn or lock anything in with. I'm use to pulling a lever & locking my truck into 4 high, of course I've never had to use 4 low while driving on the beach. I just don't know about these new AWD. I have tried to talk her into maybe a Jeep Commander or Nissan Pathfinder, but she rather have the Mountaineer if it would handle the sand. Anybody have any answers or comments let me know.

Air down the tires and drive with some commonsense and it will do great on the beach!

Thanks for your response. I always air down my tires on my F-150 unless the sand is wet. Never had a problem in 30 some yrs of driving on the beach. My wife has been shown how to air down tires. She has also drove both my trucks on the beach. The AWD system sounds similiar to the old Jeep quadra-trac from the 60's & 70's, however if I remember correctly, you still had a high & low switch. Maybe a switch or locking lever gives me a false sense of security. Well if she uses a little common sense, she won't get stuck, course she knows she can always call me to come pull her out. I just wouldn't want it to become a habit.

Mountaineers rule! lol

Monster Mountaineer!

Actually had it laying frame there. I was more or less high centered, I couldn't really move forward but I could back off of it. And yes, it was a rental... lol
