poor clampy has been sitting in the back corner of the warehome sad and neglected as I build the fun buggy and ultimate adventure jeep. it's been a long time since it's seen dirt, but I'm thinking I need to bring it back. the last time I took it out I blew the head gasket and since I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the current engine I decided to just pour in some block sealer and keep wheeling. now i'm thinking again about a re-power, post up your suggestions. and remember that clampy was built around the stock 22RE 4-cylinder. what would you like to see?

Turbo Supra. They fit in place of the 22RE with just a little firewall pounding.
Or LS1... that would be sweet in Clampy!

do something different Do a swap to propane or find a 4.6 natural gas motor or something. you could go all "eco frinedly" for a write up. it would kinda be cool!

I have an 87 toyota and will be doing a swap this winter. I am looking at the colorado 3.5L I 5. I was seriusly considering a 4.8 liter V8 but it is just overkill, I will be executing my engine swap with a somg legal theme and the I5 will be much easier to retrofit in the chassy along with all the factory smog equipment. The 4.8 V8 will not yeild to use the factory exahust manifold an the referee wants to see factory equipment installed.
I would suggest the I 5 due to the flexibility of working arround your chassy, it is still a linear engine with room for exahust and motormount work, it is also light and has good torque, out on the trail gas mileage counts and it is rated at 18 to 25 MPG on the colorado.

One more thing I forgot to mention is that the weight factor is also present in clampy. I am still leaning toward the I5 It will be easier on the syspension and will keep the CG about the same. You wont have to retrain yourself to drive with a new CG. (the newbies CENTER OF GRAVITY)

I am not sure at this time and I could not make you a good educated guess. I will do my best tofind out for you at the wreckig yard this week. Would you like to know engine and transmission weight? or just engine weight? The I 5 (L52) is attached to a 4L65E wich happens to be the same transmission the current silverado uses, that is with a different bell housing and a different converter. I have had pretty good luck with my 4L65E in my 85 c30 dually conversion. It is boted up to a 5.3 liter vortec (from the same donor vehicle 2005 silverado) and I abuse that thing 2 to 3 times a week hauling 2 to 3 engines and transmissions at a time up and down the CAJON PASS on I 15 . That 5.3 4L65E is a nice combo and I would love to see it in my toyota but I think it will be overkill, top and nose heavy on the trail, not to mention the extra cutting and welding it may require to make it fit in the narrow frame. I am honestly not afraid of the fabrication side but I dont think the V8 is as practical as the I5 in this aplication, after all I dont think anybody would be dragracing on the trail.
DOES ANY BODY HAVE SUGGESTIONS ON ENGINE CHOICES FOR CLAMPY

i think it would be cool to see another 22re built up for some serious power, oversized valves, cam, maybe bored out. turbocharged would be sweet, how come this is never done on import trucks? i know guys that have pulled horespower numbers in the high 300's out of 4-bangers, granted they are in cars but power is power right?

A 22re buildup would be nice. I am all about the Propane conversion. I helped a buddy do that on a Sammy and it turned out nice.

A 22RE buildup would be nice too, But in reality what MR Williams may be looking for is lowend torque. I agree with the HP ratings in the 300s but you are looking at 6K plus RPMs in these buildups.
Mr Williams, What are you looking for in clampys new powerplant?

I agree with Mr. web editor, swap in a 2JZ-GTE out of a wrecked mk IV toyota supra, then get your self an aftermarket turbo kit and retrofit it to ol' clampy. 500hp on stock internals all day long! You might want to get some rockwells so those 53" boggers wont be snapping axles left and right. Or you could just run it stock with some 35" tires, lol.

Build a 22-RE turbo it change the internals to high performance componets port the heads cold air intake custom exhaust (CARB legal i suppose since ya'll are in cali) NOS? maybe? build the biggest baddest 22-RE that ever crunk up and hit the trails or swap in a 350 but thats been done and would through clampy off with the extra weight up front

I wheel an 87 bronco 2 and trans planted a 4.0 v6 from a 96 explorer, now im a bit of a ford guy so it was an easy choice to stick with ford power plant, but it doesnt wiegh as much as a 350 and has a low RPM torque range as well it is easy to get more than 200-250 hp from it, more than enough for clampy.
