I got my '96 XJ about 4 months ago, and I cant figure out this gremlin that keeps showing up when I put it in 4 wheel drive. When I put it in 4 wheel, It's hard as all get out to get the stick into 1st gear and don't even think about reverse. When it's back in 2WD it works just fine, it does have some "Wind down" issues between 1st and Rev. but I'm pretty sure that's the 170,000 miles showing it's face a little. I can't find anything twisted or bent underneath, and all the u-joints seem to be fine, I'm stumped. I don't have a crazy lift with wacko driveline angles, any thoughts on what I should try next???

sounds to me that you have clutch issues. If it is a mechanical linkage you might try adjusting so clutch full disengages. If it is hydraulic check clutch master cylinder resivoir to see how low it is. If low check for leaks in lines master and slave cylinder. If still everything checks ok take a peak at inside bell housing and look for a lot of clutch debri. Might be time for clutch. Be sure its not in the trans. Check operation (engine off)of shifter going in and out of 1rst and reverse in 2wd and compare to resistance in 4wd. Good luck.

Had a similar problem with mine a few years back, ended up being the front wheel bearings. they had worn enough that they pulled the front drive shafts back just enough from the central link that it caused problems. an easy but time consuming fix. Good luck to you.
