I have a 2002 chevy silverado 1500HD with 207,000 miles on it. The problem is when ever I pull a trailer up any sort of grade the tranny gets hot. The engine temp will be just fine about 220-240 but the tranny goes straight to the red. I am looking for help on how to keep it cool. B@M offers a aluminum finned tranny pan thats should help some but i don't know if it would be enough. I don't want to go with a tranny cooler if i don't have to but that might be my only choice. Any advice would help.

Have you tried a full Flush not a filter change. I know dealers have it not all shops do. but they pull the pan and filter then flush all the old fluid out thru all the lines and run a detergent to clean the lines and cooler then they replace the filter. all in all i paided $110 at the dealer but my 04 z71 is still pulling strong

the problem has been that way ever since i had the tranny rebuilt the first time. i am now on my second rebuild and the problem is still there. I have changed the filter but have never done a flush. my mechanic says the only way to get rid of it is to put in a after market cooler but that is a lot of work and money that is why i wanted to know if anybody had experience with the B@M tranny pan that is deeper and aluminum finned to get rid of the heat. but maybe i will try the flush and see what happens. my other thought is could it be in the radiator that has never been changed.

Sorry can't comment on the larger pan with the fins for what it is worth in my professional opinion the deeper pan will hold more hot fluid and would cancel the effects of the fins but that is just an opinion no testing. The radiator is where i was going the flush to clean the passages out.

From what your describing i quesion the quality of the trans rebuld shop and how is 220-240 normal engine temp! Thats friggin overheating. Also is your truck lifted with tall tires and stock axle gears becuae that will lead to waht you are describing. THink about it if your going up a hill towing a trailer and ur tuck is lifted with big tires, that a lot of rolling resistance and without proper gears in your axles your trans will be slipping like crazy which is causing all the heat!!!!
Solid axle chevys can't be beat! My dream truck: 73-91 chevy 3500 crew cab srw with dana 60/14bolt, 6 inc long travel lift with KING shocks, 37 inc tires and a 24v cummins diesel, nv5600 and np205
