Again, another post by me. So, i got a 04 wranger unlimited with some bigger tires on it, 33 mud tires to be exact. Since then, I noticed that my jeep doesnt have the same get-up-and-go on the highway any more. (i realize they arent known for that anyway). I saw some products in Quadratech saying new gear ratios can fix the problem. Can this actually fix the problem, or no? Can anything else fix it, or am i screwed at this point? Also, Im wondering if the gears can fix it, would a regular jeep dealership be willing to instal the new gear ratios? Im not technically savvy, and the guys i got my lift kit done at dont do gears and transmissions. Also, could the gear ratios help imrove my gas mileage a little? Im dyin here!!

The correct gear ratio will bring back the power you lost when you changed to bigger tires. I am not sure what gears or even tire size that a 2004 Wrangler Unlimited came with and what ratio the transmission over drive is but I would suggest 4.56 gears for the 33" tires. The correct gears will help bring your fuel mileage closer to what it was before the lift and tires. With the stock gears and 33" tires, overdrive is useless until 60+ MPH.
Change gears. A Jeep dealer could do it, but call around to different shops for quotes.

I'm new to this sight, well to this whole internet thing. Any way, I've got a 96 Cherokee SE. The brake shoes in the back are the wider set (2 1/2"). Can anyone please tell me what rear end I'm dealing with? and possibly the gear ratio? I run 31.5 now, but have up graded to 33. I tow a trailer with wood on the weekends, and found that the only effects that it has on my Jeep is the gas mileage. I have yet to tow anything, and was wondering what gears you would sugest? Or if you know of any web sites that I can visit to find out exzactly what beast I'm dealing with? Thanks...Zio

It's either the Chrysler 8 1/4 or a dana 44 and I beleive the most common gea ratio was 3.55 they might've made some 4.10 aswell there should be a tag on the pumpkin with some numbers on it take it off and clean it up and if you can read it post the numbers or you might be able to figure it out

Actually the 1996 (XJ) Cherokee could either have the Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25 rear axle. The D44 was a factory install from 1987 - 1990 only in the XJ. The factory gear ratio depends on what engine you have, the 2.5L 4cylinder or 4.0L I-6 and if it was the up country package or tow package, automatic or manual transmission. There should be a tag on both front and rear differentials (as long as no one has removed them) that has the gear ratio on them.

I have a 99 tj and I run 33's on mine with 4.88 gears. It wont set any land speed records but it is great for running trails. My jeep is street legal but the only miles that are on it are getting to and from the trails. It just turned 40,000
