Welding front spiders

I am interested on welding my front spiders, if i was to weld them and only lock one hub, only that wheel should turn, making it easy to turn. When i lock both hubs it would be locked soild. So it would kinda be like a selectible locker, but way cheapier. I welded my back spiders and haven't had any troubles. If anybody has any ideas on how this would work let me know

Hmm... interesting... in theory it should work.

Like the web editor said, in theory it should work.  I would still recommend not welding the front spider gears.  Several years ago some one asked me to weld his front spider gears for him, but I talked him out of it.

the axles that im in the process of putting under my 88 yj have both front and rear spiders welded and 4.88 gears. so when im done making everything and get it all put together i will let you know how well it works. but the axles came off of a ford f350 origonaly and were put under a cherokee who used them for a while so im shure it would be fine. my buddy baught the whole cherokee and parted it out. i was also thinking the same thing about only locking one hub and i think it should work. makes sense.

will work for jeep parts.

I have used rigs with welded front and rear and its not that bad, a long bed full size 81 chevy and thats alot to turn, I also had a 85 toyota with welded F/R diffs and again no big deal, but thats short wheel base. fact is I will never spend money on a rear locker again!! but the front is still so-so.

about only locking one hub, what ever side you lock will be a big weak point, should be short side.

i bet it would work,  its just not very practical for a trail rig to have to stop and unlock a hub for every tight corner... but if your building a mud machine or somethin other than a trail rig then it'd probly work pretty well. have you looked at limited slip front ends? they're the best of both worlds if u keep them maintained
