Ok, I have an 85' CJ7 with a hotter than stock 258 6cyl with the factory 4 speed manual trans and the dana 300 t-case, about 6 inches of lift on some 36 inch iroks. Everything works good except the transmission is starting to give me problems. I want to put an automatic trans in but still run the same motor and t-case. Is there a good transmission that will bolt up or that there are adapters to make it work. Was thinking about a TH350 or a 700R4 but dont know if it would bolt up to the motor. Has anyone ever put an auto trans behind this motor? Need help and info.

I had an 83 CJ7 at one time that had the same motor but had a factory automatic transmission. Does anyone know what that transmission would have been and where to find one. If I knew what transmission it was I could find one but dont know what it was.

Well I did some research and found out that it was the TF999 that came stock as an auto tranny for the year models in question. I know it is a 3 speed and has a pretty good first gear ratio. I have found some local that I can get rebuilt but there is also the AW4 auto tranny that was used in later Jeeps that will be a good fit also and has overdrive. But...that transmission has to have a control module plugged into it to shift. Does anyone know if it is possible to make that transmission work on a Jeep without a computer to run the transmission? Any aftermarket plug and play wiring harness for that tranny?

the GM transmissions will not bolt up to the AMC 258 or so I have been told. Dont really want to do an engine swap at the moment. If a TH350 would bolt up I would rather go that route.

Oh, and as far as an auto being for city driving... Next time you are climbing over rocks, stumps or what ever the obstacle might be try holding the brake giving it gas and using the clutch all at the same time, I wasnt blessed with three feet.
