I want to build my own off road buggy and have a big problem. I want to be able to go through mud, snow and over rocks. I have big tires and a big enough engine but when it come to suspension i'm stuck, do I put solid axles or independant suspension. I am building my rid from the ground up so fitting and fabrication are no problem. I see everyone with solid axles, but I think it would be cool to have the independant. What do you think?

Independent is a good idea in theory, but hard to achieve in practice, wishbones would have to be mounted on the opposite chassis member to give substantial axle articulation. Drive shafts, steering joints, and suspension joints would not usually cope with these angles of articulation. Driveshafts and their joints are prone to excessive damage from trail use and calculations are a nightmare; other problems are the raising of the centre of gravity, axles are heavy items which lower this. All in all, stick with solid axles for an easy installation and a minimum of problems in use.

There is nothing wrong with IFS off road. Where it gets a bad rap is from people lifting LD trucks and putting big tires on IFS axles that were never designed to handle the added loads. If you are building from scratch and properly size and design IFS, you will not have any problems and it will give you superior ride, control and traction off road. Also the CV joints in a front drive axle are a big plus off road because you will not get Ujoint steering wheel torque whip in tight turns under power with good traction.
