I have a 2003 Discovery with the manufacturer's defect found on the Technical Service Bulletin issued by LRNA on 3-14-2003 stating that the failure of an oil pump is a design defecr. LRNA has refused to repair my Rover even after the Service Manager and the Dealership owner have informed them that I have the technical alert in hand. I have turned this over to a lawyer who specializes in this area. The dealership owner told me he could not believe that LRNA is refusing repair and setting itself up for litigation like this, however it is now in the attorney's hand and I am ready to see them go down. LRNA has the ethical and moral obligation to make good on their admitted defect.

I have given LRNA every chance to right their wrong and they have slammed the door in my face.  The VIN range is all 2003 Discoverys ending with 3A771801 – 3A808362

My attorney is getting ready to file a lawsuit on my behalf regarding the 2003 Land Rover Discovery Oil Pump Failure causing the need to replace the entire engine assembly. He is also reviewing it for the possibility of a class action lawsuit. If interested, you can contact him....Michael Wing at 251-433-7468.

The Technical Alert can be seen at:

I’m in the identical situation. Been without my ’03 for 2 weeks. Land Rover is not willing to do a thing for me even though they have issued the Technical Advisory explaining the cause of the failure.

I am absolutely amazed that a car company would not take reasonable action to correct a problem they are admitting to. The worst part is that the consumer is left with a $12,000 bill to fix a problem. It appears to me that LR would just rather pass on any major financial burden to the consumer. I have done some research and many people have gone through the same headaches when dealing with LR. I just wish I would have known this before owning my fist of 2 Discoverys.

Possibly I will give your lawyer a call; a class action would certainly make things easier for all of us.

Doubt it, they haven't logged on in over a year.

As soon as they offer a Ranger with a Diesel in America, I'll be the idiot camping out in front of the Ford Dealer!

Land Rover have a reputation for poor quality, and here in the UK it well known, dealers will not repair vehicles unless they are under warranty, and with some persuasion at that. Land Rover, many years ago, reduced their spares prices to ridiculously low levels, this was to counter the claims made against them by supplying original parts so cheaply that they found many owners would rather repair their vehicles than persue a much more costly court case.

Unfortunately LR have become adept in other countries, such as the US in defending such cases, and have installed prohibitive conditions within their warranties, so it would be worth checking any such  paperwork you may have.

I have the same problem with Land Rover 2003 and my car's VIN number is in this range.  I couldn't access the site to get a copy of Technical Service Bulletin issued by LRNA. I also like to know the status of class action lawsuit. We do have extended warranty but they refused to fix it.

A consumer-rights law firm in Seattle is investigating claims that certain models of Land Rovers may experience premature engine failure due to issues with the oil pump. To learn more about the investigation, you can visit www.hbsslaw.com/LandRover <http://www.hbsslaw.com/LandRover> . There is also a news release on this from our client at http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110113006504/en/Hagens-Berman-Investigates-Claims-Premature-Engine-Failure

hy i like this forum i have read this forum and i liked it very much now i want to share some information with you
Wow, this problem appears to be predictable some engines are not lasting the expected life span. I too purchased a ’03 disco with 38,000 miles, kept in tip top condition.. Currently at 54,000 or 4,000 over my warranty. The pump went at 70MPH, I viewed it today at the dealership, the gear is broke in 3 places, sheared the output shaft key that holds the gear. This also holds the timing drive gear causing it to spin 180 degrees resulting in bent valves. Land Rover was quick to state “I need a new engine and that I am on my own”. My second Disco also, other than a power window I have never needed service.

Thanks for posting your experiences; this is good ammunition as I deal with Land Rover to get things resolved.
