Front End Hoop Like in 4wd

I have a full time 4wd with lock up hubs. I bought it this way and i thought i read that with out a kit put in the transfer case this was impossible. But anyway i have the hubs set to free and when turning really sharp it hops like it would if they were set to lock. Im wondering if when turning sharp they bind and the hubs basically engage due to the force of turning this sharp. Or if there is some other front end issue i have that could be causing this sensation. Like ball joints or wheel bearings.

Thanks

Eric

Two possible causes. One, hubs are not disengaging and it is still in 4x4. Two, ujoints in front axle are binding badly so even though they are not engaged to wheels, the stubs to not want to flex on ujoints and cause steering to whip.

Well i bought all new u-joints and ball joints cause i thought that might be part of the issue the truck was a plow truck so im sure replacing these can only be a possitive. Thanks for the reply. How do you check to see if the hubs are disengaging? Jack it up and see if i can spin the wheel?

Plow trucks are hard on front axles. (been running them for many many years now) As far as checking operation of hub, jacking up wheel is a good way to confirm its operation.

Make sure you replace needle bearing inside hub the stub shaft rides in and seal for stub shaft to hub area. Also I would replace the thrust washers that go between stub shaft and hub.

This will be my 1st attempt at a 4wd front end rebuild. I rebuilt the front end on my 68 camaro. I printed off all the AutoZona repair guides? im having trouble finding the parts you listed would they be listed under something else?

Which parts??  Also, you might try a NAPA for some of these part as AutoZone may not carry some of them.

So if i have full time full wheel drive the lock out hubs would be aftermarket right. and my transfer case would have a kit installed? the front drive train still turns. So if the front hubs are aftermarket would the bearings and the seals and trust washers be replaced with any parts or would they have to be brand specific?

If you have a 208 (which is easily identifiable) it is not a full time case. If you have a 203 (which has a big cast iron case and a reduction unit between tranny output and tcase main body that it easy to spot), you have full time 4x4. On the after market lockout hubs, the hub wheel bearings, seals and axle stub seals, bearing and thrust washers are the same.
