Hey,

Anyone got any info on re-gearing a Z-71?  I have 37" tires on it and it wants to shift into overdrive quickly.  It has stock gears right now.  Any help appreciated.  Thanks

I would suggest at least a 4.88 here. A 5.13 would be better still. Do not let numbers scare you because even with 5.13's you would only be turning about 2100 RPM at 65 in OD which is about right here as a compromise for higher cruise power requirements with a lift. Forget about lower RPM cruises and 4.10's that many seem to think is the perfect gear with any tire size. The "perfect" gear ratio depends entirely on the tire size, vehicle and engine. I would not wait to long as you might be buy a new tranny in future if you do not due to added strain on it with stock gears and lift. (you are really putting a "twist" on it) The 4l60 has a very deep first gear in it (3.06 to 1 vs 2.48 for a 4L80) which helps it launch your tall ratio right now and make it (feel) okay at times but it top gear it lacks and 4L60 has a tall OD too (.7). It has got to be a slug at time and hunt around a lot in gears too.
