how can u tell the diff. between 400 motor and 460 motor

They 400 is based on 351 Cleveland block, the 460 is not. The 429 and 460 shared same big block design and heads and valve covers are massive and the 400's pale by comparison and it is based on a SB Ford design.

another way to tell is there is 8 bolts(351-400) in the valve covers,351C,351M,and 400 do not have a timing cover that is removable it is built into block also the 335 series(351,400) have a unique fuel pump mounting bolts are vertical instead of horizontal. Also the exhaust manifold bolts on 429-460's are strait across 351-400 have a high and low bolt each cyl.

Just count the valve cover bolts like that guy said. Believe it or not, that's why ford made them different.
