the black smoke is a good sign that the truck is injecting way to much fuel. basically it is so much that it goes into the exhaust and is burnt off from the EGT's (exhaust gas temperature). as for the steering column, it could be a number of things. if the truck is an older one, then the whole thing has seen some wear and tear, and should be replaced, borgeson makes a nice, quality replacement that is 5x better than wuts in that henry now.  depending on what size lift is on the truck could determine if the steering geometry is out of wack, this is commonly overlooked in a build, and can be fixed by steering arms, pitman arms, crossover steering, etc.
