Well first it smokes because injector pump is either set incorrectly or purposely set higher than it should be as this will cause a lot of black smoke. (some think this is cool, I do not though) On steering column, you need to look at complete front end and figure out why steering shock loads are so high and replace complete steering column too. It sound like you bought your son somebody else's problems. Buyer beware when you buy a used lifted truck.

What year truck is it? What size lift is it?

The steering problem is a BIG one, that needs to be fixed by a competent shop ASAP.

Let us know the year and we can help with the smoking problem.

I suggest you park the thing until you get steering issue resolved. That truck is a lawsuit waiting to happen if it causes a wreck. You need to get this fixed even if it means removing body lift as this is a extremely unsafe condition.

Actually a body lift has everything to do with steering column problem because it changes its angle and length as body in lifted off frame.

Yup, body lift is the cause of the steering problem. That is why when you buy kits these days they come with a steering shaft extender.

I'm glad you got that steering thing fixed. Now here's about the smoke. that smoke is uncombusted fuel. many times it is done purposely. if the truck has a programer or "chip", it is telling the ECM to send excess fuel, which is then pretty much wasted, and causing your smoke. Simple to fix(if you really want to).If it has a tunable programmer, just turn it down, however if not, you will need to add more air.(equal fuel+air=total combustion & less smoke).Look into cold air intakes to start. It can easily grow from there. Gettin' the right combustion takes time, but just tell him all that smoke is actually wasted fuel. $$$AHHHH! BLACK SMOKE DON'T MEAN IT'S BROKE!

A cold air intake is not the fix here. Somebody jacked the pump up to try to squeak a few more HP out of the 6.9 diesel at the expense of excessive fuel usage. It is a very old trick.  You need to reset pump settings.

i agree w/Sno...somebody turn the pump up to max to get the most fuel out of it. Take it to a good diesel shop that rebuilds pumps and they can turn it back down to stock settings and you might even notice better fuel economy too.

Well yall are correct. There is a screw you can adjust to tweak the fuel, the pump itself would have to be rigged, but I really don't know who had this truck nor thier diesel know-how. I've built sled pulling diesels about 13 years now, and have seen some less than genuis ideas. If your not sure what exactly HAS been done,it might be best to let a diesel-tech look at it.(not a dealer). Or, let the boy blow some smoke.

And waste some extra 4.50/gal fuel too!
