i have a 93 dodge that has a 3.9L magnum V6. i have been running 33s on it for a while, and i just added a 4" lift. fist off i was wondering if anybody has ever done anything to a V6 like this to get more low end for wheeling, and better overall power to push around larger tires. my next question is if anyone knows where i can get some custom bumpers for the same truck, or knows of any place where i can get some good detailed instructions to build a good off-road bumper that i can later put a winch on. its pretty hard to find many common off-road products for this truck, little alone cheap parts so any help or ideas are appreciated

I think your first mistake was getting that 4 inch lift. I did that ifs lift first and will never do that again. I put full size axles under my 95 dakota with 4.88 gears you will be much happier going that route i know i am

The above guy is on target with gears. Many say I want to make my truck look bad and put big tires on it but what they are really saying is that I want my truck to be SLOWER because I am raise effective gear ratio and reduce wheel torque transfer to ground in every gear. The effect is the same as leaving stock tires on it and putting in much taller axle gears. Either way performance will suffer.

i would like to eventually put a solid front axle on my truck but its a little over my head as far as fabrication for that goes, and as far as gears go, i would like to keep them fairly tall because this is mainly a daily drive/weekend warrior, and considering i me and my dad have an FJ40 with 4.11s that is pretty much an off-road rig, 4.88s are a bit low for what i want. honestly what i would like to do is find a 318 out of a dakota or an older 1500 so i could keep the taller gears and still have plenty of low end for wheeling, which leads me to another question, has anyone done that swap into and older dakota?

First of all the old FJ used a derivative of a old GM six cylinder that Toyota bought right to that had a lot of low RPM torque which your Dakota does not have. Next it did not have OD. Then if FJ has big tires, a 4.10 is not really deep. Also if you think you are going to get better MPG with a 318 and current gears and tires you are not and added torque will add tranny strain. 4.88's with 33's is not deep and in OD you would only be turning about 2400 RPM at 65 in OD which is not much for engine and tire combo. If you did not have OD I would not agree on 4.88 with your 33's but you do and overall it will perform better off road with 4.88 and V6 than stock gears with 33's and a heavier motor up front and be easier to cool as well. Generally gear will help you more off road than more HP because HP is basically torque x RPM /5252 and a small engine winding up more can make more usable HP off road than a better one turning slower and produce less drive line strain too.
