I am not sure if this is what this site deals with, but I have a problem with my clutch on a 98 Wrangler 4.0L standard trans.
I was waiting to turn right with the clutch depressed. All of the sudden the pedal went the rest of the way to the floor. Not knowing what happened, I started pumping the clutch pedal. It built up pressure and ceased to move, stopping in the fully extended position(not on the floor). Felt a lot like when you bleed brakes. (when you pump up pressure until the pedal is stiff)
The shop I took it to wants to do the entire clutch system to the tune of over $1000. I am no expert, but I feel that the clutch itself is fine and this is more of a hydraulic issue. I have never felt or experienced any sort of slippage with the clutch. The pedal just would not move anymore after falling to the floor. If anyone can shed some light on what the issue might be or any suggestions on what to do, I would greatly appreciate it. thx

This is a pretty simple fix here. It is either the slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder going bad. If it is the slave on bell housing, it will show signs of leakage and be wet. If it is not leaking there then master has a internal leak (seals going bad) and needs to be rebuilt or replace. Neither one is hard to change and can be had for under 100 dollars for both of them in after market.

Awesome...thank you so much. I will start with those first and get my jeep out of that garage asap.
I thought I read somewhere that to change the slave you had to drop the tranny? Do you know anything about that being true?

If it is mounted internally you do. This is one time you might wish you had a 4cyl because those were mostly external. I suspect the master cylinder here if it is not loosing fluid from reservoir.

hmm....i have been losing some fluid for a while now. I'm half lazy and half.....well, just lazy, so I didn't really look into it. =( It is kind of carmel colored and I believe around firewall/back of engine towards the center of the vehicle. This is sounding like the slave cylinder location, as with my limited knowledge i believe the master to be somewhere near the brake master cylinder. I have never dropped a transmission, but I may have a friend that can if that ends up being the problem....I'll give it a good looking over when I get it back tomorrow.

It looks like a mini master cylinder and is close to brake master cylinder.

Not sure what you mean by grinding in neutral. THis suggests that you have main shaft bearings going out in gearbox. Have you checked/changed fluid in tranny?
