Hey fellas....so how tough would it be for Ring & Pinion replacement.Anyone done it before, I wanna save some coin but also want it correctly installed. I'm currently running 3.55's pushN 33" but want to install 35" tires. Would I be better off sending axles to a shop to have it done and pay *** or could I do it myself . Thannxxx

It is not technically hard but it does require patience and ability to use proper tools and setup mesh, backlash and preload correctly. If this is all greek to you, you best farm it out. I would suggest you buy gears out right then shop around for best install price.

Thanks sno. I'm pretty skilled at turnN wrenches and doing at home jobs with the "beast" (as I like to call her). I like to do my own work but I'm kinda going in blindly with R&P replacement. Never have done one.I've been researching and gettN good info. but still hestitant. Tools I have or can purchase/borrow speciality items. I know I will need a press and dail indicator. Just looKing for more tips or info.for that unforeseen prob. that always pops its ugly head in a build .

A few tips here, buy a dial indicator. They do not cost that much and you do not need a very expensive one either. You need it more than anything to setup backlash when done. On gear changes, if you do not replace bearings or change carrier it tends to go easier because carrier bearing preload is already okay and you just need to maybe adjust shim for it from side to side (while keeping total thickness the same) if need be for correct backlash and mesh. Sometimes pinions are marked with a "+.002" or "-.004" or the like for depth reference from standard. If you are lucky enough to have both sets market you can adjsut shims according to difference in marking and sometime hit correct pattern dead on when back lash is set correctly. Also, you need to get mesh pattern right when you check it with gear paint even if you have to run a bit extra backlash to get it right. If you have to error a bit on backlash you want to go loose not tight. (if it calls for .007 to .009 and you wind up with .011 or so it is not a deal breaker but .006 or .005 would be) Not sure if I helped you or muddied the water more. I have done several over the years but it has been a while since I have done one. I have a set of 4.56's on shelve here for my K3500 truck that I need to install sometime.
