just one more thing to think about have you ever seen a jeep pull a 1/2 to 1ton truck*(ford) out of mudd to the frame or even a good jeep vs one of the big three locking chains. when me and all my freinds get into a your dodge, chevy, ford argument bring out the chain and that always settles it.
ps. only advantage they got in the mud is weight.

do you thing jeep owners ar retarded? were not gonna try and pull a 1 tom ford out of a mudd hole that buried up to the axles! i wouldnt try it, youll need a bulldozer...and hooking chains up to a jeep w/a 1 ton also is assinign,it be like dragging a little baby around on a rope pretty damn easy!

Actually a mid size farm tractor or backhoe would make very short work of the extraction. If they could not do it because it was stuck so bad, a dozer would damage the frame on it. Also I very rarely use chains but rather use 20,000 lb rated tow straps.

Snoman is right. Back in highschool(20 yrs ago) I used chains when I was runnin a 429 76 F250 with 44 gumbo's. But now its a strap always, I'll never us a chain to pull someone out again. I use the chain to move trees & stuff off the trail.
oh ya I wish I had my 46 CJ2A back in high school instead of the ford. Compared to the jeep the ford was an ocean liner or a land yot.

I would not mind having a old fully restore CJ2a either! Todays Jeeps are not really Jeeps anymore. They have lost touch with their roots.

how do you really feel about that "jeep thing" you seem to be so irritated about? no, really, you shouldnt hold back, and go ahead and tell the world how you really feel? lol...
oh, and the only place ford trucks should go is the junk yard.
a stock jeep is more capible in more real life situations than that of alot of "modified" rigs. if you've ever owned one you'd know that.
i will say there is a valid point here about those who have a jeep vehicle but probably have never "really driven" it. you should never talk up your rig till you've taken it out, ridden it hard, broken some major components and gotten impossibly stuck a few times.
i dunno, just a thought....

Unlike most here, I have owned 4x4's for over 35 years and been around Jeeps as long as I can remember. I have seen a lot of change. I remember when 4x4's where no nonsense and nearly bullet proof and when ride and creature comforts where a minor consideration. Today, ride and creature comforts are the main focus of even Jeep 4x4's and true tuffness is a remote secondary consideration at best. The Jeep name used to stand for something but today it is marketed more as a icon, not as a namesake with inherent tuffness and abilty. The worst thing that ever happen to Jeep was when Chrysler bought them because every year as they strive to make more and more money off of them by civilizing them and marketing them as daily family cars to replace the family sedan they have lost more and more of what a Jeep used to be all about. AMC brought the Jeep back to life so that Chrysler could kill it in a slow death.

WOW...thats what I believe. I just don't think I could say it as well...at all. Good Job Snoman!! I like xjs, even though I think cjs, tjs, and the kaiser jeeps are very capable, I would still keep my xj over those. I don't like the new jk at all, and you can't persuade me to either. I have a 2001 ford f-150, and it can go through 3 foot deep mudholes on its 285/55R20 street tires, where my friends lifted dodge on 33s gets stuck, but I'd still wheel my jeep ove my truck anyday.

I would not beat the drum for Chevy either as they are fading fast too. GM has forgotten what a P/U truck is supposed to be. Their latest attempt is complete with chrome plated plastic bumpers, cheap plastic louvers on hood and the ABS controller moved from its protected spot under the hood to under truck exposed to elements, stones, mud and salt. Also the std cab has lot LESS headroom than last model.

Man the "Jeep Thing" is all a state of mind, a feeling you get when driving around with no top. If you have ever been mudding in a topless Jeep you would understand, people may think you are crazy, but that is also a "Jeep Think".
I do understand what you are talking about with people that own a 4x4 to look cool, but that is definitely not a "Jeep Thing" it happens with all 4x4s.
I own a Jeep as well as a long bed F150 and an early Bronco. The Bronco is a project so I don't have to much wheelin time in it. However, I can say, when it comes to tight trails, that my Jeep YJ will go more places that my F150 because of the tighter turning radius and narrower stance. On the other hand, the YJ gets pretty scary on step hill climbs where the truck performs its best.

You can defiantly climb steep hills safer with a FS P/U. Especially if it is not lifted. If hill climbing is your game, you want to keep a low "profile"
