hi! i have 2 questions. 1 is stupid, one, not so stupid. i would really appreciate an answer for both.

question 1:

im most likely putting 38" ground hawg bias tires on my 81 jimmy with 12 bolt rear, 10 bolt front.
- doing MILD off roading (hunting only, no hardcore trails or mud holes)
- regearing to 4.10.

i was wondering how this would do on the highway. i have no clue how a tire like this would act.

question 2 (stupid one ) :

If i were to regear my truck to 4.88, keep stock axles and etc, and also mild off roading, could i run 44" ground hawgs? just curious really. and also how would those be on the highway?

I would gretly appreciate it if everyone gave me some honest answers.

Ok  so just like the saying goes... Theres no such thing as a stupid question.  Everyone has them and this is just about the fastest way to find out the answer.
So answering the first question, this tire is rated for light mud/heavy trail.  So yeah would do great hunting but for the highway they are LOUD and wobble a bit.  I have seen these on highway as a 35" and they had little wobble but still noticeable. If you went 38" on 4.10 it would be a little slow off the line but fine all the way up to redline at 75 or 80mph.
Answer #2 is up for someone else...

#2.............
same as #1, slow and handle very poorly. kinda like chasing the steering wheel around to stay on the road. especially for the short wheelbase.

looks???, cool, lol.

the loudness doesnt bother me, im just worried if i re geared my axles would they be okay for just highway/hunting? all it would be would be hill climbing in 4 lo.

the reason i picked these tires out is because theyre an affordable price, and many people have told me theyll outlast your truck lol.

38" tires with 4:10 gears will be slugish in high range, but will pull real good at 70 MPH IF you can keep control.  Regear to at least 4:56, 4:88 would be better for off road but you might not like the higher RPM on the highway.  44" tires will snap 10 and 12 bolt axle shafts like tooth pics.  Driving mildly you may be ok with 38" off road, but truthfully 35" tires is the limit for 10 & 12 bolt's with alloy axle shafts for hard driving and 33" limit for really hard driving.  Hope this helps you.

my uncle used to have sw chevy with 427ci, he went through a few sets of 37" ground hawgs, back when they first became popular because they were the largest mudder you could get. I was small so I have no idea how long they lasted, there is still a couple wore out ones next to his shop.
4 lo will make up for the high gears on the trail

1ton nailed it... if you do this and do thing like hill climbs in 4lo you better get used to replacing axle shafts...

do you mean with 38's or 44's? because i got the 38's sittin in my garage right now. if the shafts ever snap ill replace them with some tougher ones, obviously.

i would find an older 3/4 ton or 1 ton pickup with the 4.10's or 4.56's in good condition at a junk yard somewhere... because for the cost of re-gearing and whatnot it's just about as easy to swap in complete axles... and the extra time involved will be made up for as soon as you get to a point where you're original axles would have snapped... and some older GM axles came with an Eaton locker in the rear anyway... that'd be a major score... then you have alot less to worry about... but do your homework and thoroughly check out the axles...  it is an option to think about...

I dont think ur axles will last with 38s and hill climbs becuase normallly in hill clibms your foot is to the floor, motor roaring and all 4 tires spiiniing there heads off and considering i broke my rear 12 bolt on my blazer with ONLY 33 INC TIRES (           and a heavy right foot of course)!!!  I really doubut your axles will live with 38s, dont even metion 44s as trying to do a burnout will snap the axles and you wont be able to stop the truck with little 1/2 ton brakes.  If you are always in 4 low doing 10 mph with steady throttle and no jerky starts or rip roaring take offs then ur axles will live for awhile but whats the fun of having to baby the truck!!!  I swapped in 8 lug d44 and rear 14 bolt 10.5 ff axle in my blazer cuz its not fun worring about your axles breaking when u are trying to have fun

I use to do 4x4 mud drags and a friend of mine was running a small block in his Chevy short bed with a mild cam headers intake and Edelbrock carb with a 3,000 rpm stall and 35s some times 38s he had a 12 bolt rear and 10 bolt front never in 3 years of us racing did he brake an axle both difs were open it might be different if he had a locker but I would just keep a spare set of axles and if you start breaking them then look in to up grading. Also I would get a duel shock stabilizer for the front.

Open diffs are a lot easier on axles without doubt and realistically it is questionable as to whether you really need a locker for mud drags anyway as some do better without them.

hello ground hawg. I own and run 40"x17x16.5 hawgs. I also use them for hunting and mountain running in wyoming. My last set lasted 3 yrs. meaning about 35,000 miles est or more. I love these tires because of their highway wear and tear. I have to travel on highway a lot to get to wear I hunt. My truck is a heavily modified 77 ford dana 60frt/70 rear powerlock posi rear. 6200lb truck. I powder balance my tires with this glass bead forgot the name but will check later. Highway manners or kinda crude but they will last longer than any other mudder out their and their studable for ice. Mine are studded for ice. Hawgs are always about 1" shorter than they say they are 40" on 12" rim about 39" tall. 38" is about 37" actual. Monster mudder same situation denman tires are just this way. I run 4.56 gear and healthy bigblock. For you I would run 4.10's. Manual tranny or automatic? Your drivetrain is borderline with this tire but if you drive smart you'll be ok. 10 bolt front is the weak link for sure. If you do and alignment,be sure to zero out the tire meaning make that tire as flat as it can be to the highway. Most people just get them close and walk away once in the yellow during the alignment. make sure your driveshafts are in good shape. spline wear! I run boggers, swampers, monster mudders and LTB,s. Bias ply tires are sensitive to air pressure. My highway set up is 23psi and play time is 17psi for snow runs. I just purchased another set of hawgs in march. One other thing is i never seem to get 4 round tires. one will always have a little hop in diameter. Thats just the way it is with bias ply tires. Been running bias tires for over 20 yrs. I like the big lugs on the bias, radials don't have big lugs of any brand. Swamper SX is another good tire if your looking for alternate. Doesn't last as long as a hawg. You can cut on a hawg to make a better tire if need to. Any other questions drop me a note. The hawg is where it all started before the bogger, good pullin tire once you do a little cuttin on the tred.

ya know, i think that you should go with the biggest tires that you can, but go with Super Swamper Boggers instead. that way even though you say you only do mild off roading, you have the ability to get into and out of deep mud holes.

by the way, what are you packing under the hood?

I have never used a set of boggers on the street but would assume they would ware fast I would definitely try and get a set for when you go out on the trails though there awesome in deep mud.
