I have a 90 yj with a 2.5, D30 & D35 and i run 4.88s. i run 33s w/ a spring-over swap and a 2 inch body lift. runs fine with the gears, i think that it should have enough power to run 35s.

The 2.5 is a sturdy little mill I have a 2000 Cherokee I bought new with a 2.5 and a stick for 100K on it now and never wished it had a 4.0 for its usage. It gets in high teens to low 20's in urban usage and has for years. It is pretty consistent. If you are worried about MPG, do not think that a tall gear ratio is going to make it get great MPG with a lift which adds even more drag to it. (which has areo dynamics of a brick to begin with too) Limit cruise speeds to 55 to 60 is you want best possible MPG. On tire size, I would say 4.88 with 33's and 5.13 with 35 with 2.5. I would not go above 33's if you plan to use lockers and 35's with open diffs. Anything bigger is asking for trouble. Some might like flirting with failure and get by with bigger tires but I cannot recommend it.
