If you are going manual, I would not waste time with a 465 or 420. I would go with a NV4500 5 speed. Much wider total gear spread and 4500 is not long either and easy to fix in. If you use a 96 to 2000 SB/BB 4500 bellhousing and a Dodge 4500 with a 23 spline output it will bolt right use to a Dana 300 Tcase. YOu will need a adaptor to use Dodge tranny in bell housing as input shaft is longer (or use a adapter between Dodge bellhousing and engine) If you use a GM 4500 then they are all 32 spline output while Dodge can be 23 or 29.

A T18 is not a bad tranny but this is 2008 not 1975 and there is some fine 5 speeds out there that shift much better and give you a wider ratio range too. A modern 5 speed HD OD tranny with a set of deep gears in axles rules the day over ANY 4 speed tranny.

How long is the NV4500 as compared to the T-18? Are there any 5 spd's that will work ok in a late 70's CJ5? My CJ5 is lifted with 33" tires possibly swithching to 35's later.

There is no real easy swap here because of your 6 spline tranny output shaft. That died off in 79. Jeep pretty much standardized on a 23 spline one after that. If you swap out your Dana20 Tcase and replace it with a Dana300 (which jeep used from 80 to 86 in CJ's and is 23 spline and has a much deeper low range than your current Tcase) you would be able to select from several more trannies to use example, AX15 and NV3550 with no adapter. The NV3550 is a NV3500 in a different case that is a bolt in replacement for a AX15 (Jeep switched to 3550 from AX15 in 2000) If you have a 77 to 79 T18 it has a 6.40 first gear and a 6 spline output. (if it is a 76 or earlier is has a 4.02 first gear) The Dana 20 Tcase has a 2.03 low range. The NV3550 has a 4.02 first gear but the Dana 300 Tcase has a 2.62 low range.
